11 Lady Tigers remain alive at WCWA National Championship, Campbellsville sits in first after Day 1

MARIETTA, Ga. — A Lady Tiger wrestling record 11 individuals have reached the WCWA National Championship semifinals and Campbellsville University sits in first place with 134.5 team points after Day 1.

The maximum number of wrestlers any team can compete with is 15 and 11 of those for Campbellsville are still alive for a national title – which CU has eight in its six-year history.

The Lady Tigers lead Life University (78) by a wide margin as the Running Eagles only have six wrestlers alive in the championship bracket. Jamestown University is fourth (74) and Oklahoma City is fourth (62.5).

McKenzie Bacich – 101 pounds

The biggest upset of the first day came from the lightest weight class as Bacich took over the No. 1-seed Ira Navarro with a 10-9 decision.
Bacich earned a pair of wins in the first two rounds.
In the quarterfinals, Bacich tech'd Madison Brown, 11-1.
She will wrestle Esther Walker of Midland in the semifinal on Saturday morning.

McKayla Campbell – 109 pounds

Wrestling as the No. 2 seed, Campbell earned a pair of pins – both just over one minute of time. She pinned Araceli Cruz of Gannon in 1:13 then took down Kory Phillips of Southwestern Oregon CC in 1:04.
Campbellsville will now face three-seeded Jessica Dehart of Eastern Oregon on Saturday in the semifinal.
Top-seeded Emily Shilson also still remains and will face four-seeded Sugey Ceja in the semifinals.
Campbellsville finished runner-up last season and earned All-American honors for the second-straight year.

Charlotte Fowler – 116 pounds

The unseeded returning All-American, Fowler won twice on Friday to clinch a spot in the semifinals.
She defeated Jamayia Blackston of Jamestown University, 16-4, then took down Aliyah Rollins of Missouri Baptist, 11-8.
Fowler will now take on top-seeded Jaslynn Gallegos in the semifinal match.

Katlyn Pizzo – 116 pounds

Pizzo, the No. 2-seed at 116 pounds, earned a pair of pins and it wasn't even close. She pinned Jazlyn Ruelas in 11 seconds before doing the same against Alexandra Magana of Texas Wesleyan in 60 seconds.
Pizzo will now face three-seeded Ashley Gooman in the semifinals. If she can pull off the win and Fowler earn the upset, the two would square off in the finals – which would be the first time in CU history that would happen.

Adriana Lopez - 123 pounds

Coming in as the No. 5-seed, Lopez earned a bye and then a pin over Alexandra Alers of Gannon. Moving to the round of 16, she picked up an 8-0 win over Isabella Badon of Presbyterian.
Now the freshman will have her toughest test to date in her rookie season as No. 1-seed Vayle-rae Baker of Augsburg is awaiting in the semifinal.

Abby Nette – 130 pounds

In the first round of 130 pounds, Nette made quick work of Cassy Favela of Schreiner with a pin in 1:03 before earning two tech falls in the round of 16 and quarterfinals.
In the round of 16, Nette tech'd down Cassidy O'hara of Grays Harbor and then had the same result against eight-seeded M. Parker of Oklahoma City.
Nette will face the four-seed from Life University, A Cortez.
Nette was the Most Outstanding Wrestling in last years championship after claiming the 130-pound title with Emmanuel College before transferring to CU.

Gabrielle Garcia – 143 pounds

Another rookie Lady Tiger made a name for herself on the first day at the WCWA National Championship as Gabby Garcia earned three wins, including two over seeded wrestlers.
She pinned Sidney Ramos in 1:07 before taking down the No. 4-seed Erin Redford of Easter Oregon, 2-0.
In the quarterfinal, Garcia picked up her second pin by taking down Andrea Prince of Jamestown University in 29 seconds.
The semifinal bout will feature a former Lady Tiger, Erica Sotelo. She's seeded No. 1 at 143 pounds and not wrestles for Life University.

Alexia Foca – 155 pounds

The fourth-seeded 155-pounder, Foca moved to the semifinal with ease.
She earned a first-round bye, then picked up two pins.
Her first pin came against Treasure Smith of Central Methodist in 1:32.
Her second pin came against Missouri Baptist's Kaylee Foster in just 30 seconds.
Foca will now wrestle the No. 1-seed from Lakeland, Jayden Laurent.

Kenya Sloan – 170 pounds

The top-seeded Kenya Sloan earned a pin and tech fall to move into the semifinal on Saturday.
She pinned Evangelina Toruno of Southwestern Oregon CC in 1:46 before tech'ing Jane Allen of Life University, 10-0, in 44 seconds.
She will now face five-seeded Jade Piper of Umpqua in the semifinal on Saturday.

Mariah Harris – 170 pounds

The No. 2-seed at 170 pounds, Harris earned a couple of tech falls in her first two bouts.
She won 11-0 over Sienna Lejeune and 11-0 over Ashley Molina.
Harris will face Jordan Nelson of Life University on Saturday.
If Harris and Sloan both win – it would also be the first time in CU history two Lady Tigers will square off in the finals.

Alexandra Castillo – 191 pounds

After earning a bye in the opening round, No. 2 Castillo pinned her loan opponent on Friday.
She pinned Madlyen Narravo of Central Methodist in 1:10.
Castillo will now face Gabrielle Hamilton of Life University on Saturday in the semifinal.

Consolation Bracket

Mhina Oseitutu (143) and Randi Robison (136 lbs) after Day 1.
After losing her first match, Oseitutu picked up a bye and three wins in the consolation bracket to remain alive.
Robison won her first match of the day over Life's Shani Tyson with a pin but lost 10-0 to Aliyah Yates in the Round of 16. She remains in the consolation bracket and will wrestle on Saturday.
Rory Coscia lost her first bout to Alex Enriquez of Life via pin but then turned around and earned two pins herself to stay alive. She later lost to Mattison Parker to end her WCWA National Championship.
Sophia Carson wrestled just twice on Friday and went 1-1. She lost her first match but rallied in the consolation bracket to earn a 12-2 tech fall. Carson's tournament ended on Day 1 as well after falling 10-0 to Eunique Davis of Tiffin University.
