Stellar pitching by O'Brien and Salazar help Tigers split on Opening Day

MOBILE, Ala. — Tiger baseball was able to squander an Opening Day split with No. 24 Mobile and Talladega College. Campbellsville fell victim to a comeback win by the host Rams, 4-3, before beating the Tornados in the second game, 4-2.

Gage O'Brien (1-0) was spectacular in game two striking out eight batters through five innings and allowing only three hits. Alex Salazar was also very good in his start in game one allowing only one earned run through 5.1 innings and striking out six.

Steven Butts relieved O'Brein in game two and earned a save. All six outs he recorded were via the strikeout.

Offensively, the Tigers only mustered nine hits in total – six in game one and three in game two. Jorge Ortiz and Tommy Sepulveda both had two hits while Colton Titus reached base four times with a hit and three walks and also drove in two of the five runs overall.

Mobile 3, Campbellsville 2

In his first start as a Tiger, Alex Salazar (0-1) was solid in the season opener allowing only three hits and one earned run while striking out six. A couple errors in the sixth inning allowed Mobile to rally and come from behind to chase Salazar out of the game.

The Tigers picked up a 2-0 lead in the third inning after Jalen Horton sparked CU. He singled to right field and stole second base before scoring on an RBI single by Colton Titus

After a Tommy Sepulveda ground out, Titus advanced into scoring position then scored on an RBI single to left field by Jorge Ortiz to put CU ahead, 2-0.

That was all the offense CU could muster overall, though. The Rams scored their first unearned run in the fourth inning after back-to-back doubles by Bailey Bannon and Dalton Rone. But Bannon didn't score on the second double, he later scored on an error by Sepulveda at shortstop.

In the fifth inning with CU leading 2-1, the Tigers had another chance to extend its lead but couldn't come up with the big hit. Titus walked with one out and Ortiz singled with two outs, but Sepulveda couldn't come up with the timely hit stranding both.

The Tigers didn't have a base runner in the final two innings.

The offense for Mobile came in the sixth as Campbellsville committed three errors. Hunter McIntosh came in from the bullpen and walked two batters while striking out one but allowed both unearned runs. Trestyn DeMilieu relieved him as the third pitcher in the inning and after a walk, worked out of the inning.

Hunter Avery was solid on the hill for Mobile tossing 4.2 innings allowing five hits and two earned runs. Caleb Coffey saw action in relief for the Rams tossing 2.1 innings and striking out three.

Campbellsville 4, Talladega 2

Talladega took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning but didn't score again until the sixth frame. The Tigers scored all four of their runs in the fifth inning.

In the first it was a dropped third strike that haunted O'Brien. Jorge Rodriguez reached base and later scored after an error and single by the Tornados.

Skipping to the fifth inning, it was Tyler Cox being hit by a pitch to start the four-run rally. After the leadoff hit-by-pitch, NAME* Alfonso replaced NAME De Leon on the hill for Talladega and then Alfonso hit Jack Bauer to force another change.

Luis Padron was able to load the bases with a single to left field and then the Tigers scored on a sacrifice fly by Colton Titus – scoring Cox. Sepulveda then picked up a timely double to left-center field scoring two more runs. Sepulveda scored later in the inning on an error by Talladega to put CU ahead, 4-1.

O'Brien's day was complete after striking out the side in the fifth inning but the Tornados rallied in the sixth. With Butts on the hill, a leadoff double came around to score on a single by Wander Arias cutting CU's lead to two, 4-2. Then Butts struck out the next two Tornados to end the threat.

The seventh inning also was a little stressful for CU but a leadoff single was stranded after Butts struck out the side.
