Tigers split again on day two in series with Mobile and Talladega

MOBILE, Ala. —  After splitting yesterday's doubleheader with Mobile and Talladega the Tigers went 1-1 in today's two game set.

Winning game one of the two game set off a stellar performance from Adbiel Morales and Aaron Hutchinson, head coach Beauford Sanders was able to record his 1,200-career win.

However, after two quick runs in the first inning of game two, the bats quieted down for the Tigers, dropping the second to Talladega, 3-2.

Campbellsville 3, Mobile 2

In yesterday's first game with No. 24 Mobile (5-1) the Tigers were a victim to a comeback win, falling 4-3, but the script was flipped in game one today as the Tigers trailed 2-0 through three innings before rallying back with a run in the fourth and another couple in the fifth inning.

Jesse Davis started on the mound for CU, but struggled throw two innings as he gave up two runs, while walking three.

Trailing by a pair in the bottom of the third, Stephen Streltzoff replaced Davis, as he was able to work out of a bases loaded, no out jam without any extended damage.

As the Tigers came to bat in the fourth, Adbiel Morales was able to work into a hitters count, leading 3-1 before sending a ball deep to left field to put the Tigers on the board with his first homerun of the season.

CU looked to rally behind Morales' homerun, as Tyler Cox followed with a single to left for the team's third hit of the ballgame. However, after trying to go from first to third on a wild throw, Cox, was thrown out, sending the Tigers back onto the field trailing the Rams, 2-1.

With the game just reaching the halfway marked, Aaron Hutchinson made his way onto the mound for his first action for the Tigers this season. After throwing 33 innings a year ago, carrying a 4.05 ERA Hutchinson worked his magic against the Rams for the remainder of the ballgame, throwing three hitless innings.

While Hutchinson looked to close the scorebook on Mobile, the Tigers moved to fifth as they looked to push two more runners across the plate to take their first lead of the afternoon.

Cale Thompson led off the fifth, working his way to a single to left center before advancing to second on a wild pitch. With Thompson in scoring position, Sam Fagerness took advantage with a double down the left field line to notch the game, 2-2.

Colton Titus then was able to swap places with Fagerness with his own double to left field, giving CU a 3-2 lead.

After Hutchinson worked a quick bottom half of the fifth, the Tigers looked to add to their advantage in the sixth. Campbellsville was able to load the bases on a leadoff single from Morales and a pair of walks, but a pair of strikeouts, left three men stranded on base.

Hutchinson continued to deal throughout the sixth and the seventh, not allowing a base runner until waling Dalton Rone with two outs in the seventh.

On a 3-3 day from Morales and a lockdown three innings from Hutchinson, Campbellsville was able to give Coach Sanders his 1,200 win as a head coach with a 3-2 victory.

Talladega 3, Campbellsville 2

In game two on the day for CU, the Tiger bats came out hot as Colton Titus started the ball game singling through the hole at short. After a wild throw advanced Titus to second base, Tommy Sepulveda stepped up to the plater for a single of his own, giving Campbellsville an early 1-0 lead.

With the hot hitting Morales at the plate, Sepulveda then was able to swipe second before the first career hit from Eddy Arteaga scored Sepulveda from second base.

As the Tigers took an early 2-0 advantage, Brady Tedesco in his first appearance of the season faced the minimum throw two innings with five strikeouts.

However, after recording the first two outs in the third, Tedesco found himself in a jam, as a pair of singles and stolen bases from the Tornados allowed them to squeeze out a run, cutting the Tiger lead to 2-1.

After going 3-3 in the first game of the day, Morales looked to stay hot as he doubled a ball to deep left-center in the bottom of the third. Tyler Cox then followed with an HBP, giving the Tigers runners on first and second with no one out. Nonetheless, Morales and Cox were unable to be advanced.

Again, Tedesco found himself in some trouble in the top of the fourth after giving up a single and a double, putting runners on first and third with one out. This closed the book for the day for Tedesco as he was replaced by Deshawn Welch.

As Welch entered the game, he put up two ground outs, but allowed the run to score, to close the book on Tedesco with four hits, two runs, and five strikeouts.

As the game was now tied, the Tigers continued to struggle to put multiple at bats together, as only one two runners reached base after the third inning.

Talladega, however, looked to keep the placing pressure on CU with a two hit fifth. Nonetheless, Welch was able to work out of the jam, where the score remained tied at two until the seventh.

It was in the top of the seventh as Hunter McIntosh entered play for the Tigers as he was able to record a strikeout and walk before being replaced by Collin Ledbetter. As Ledbetter enter the ballgame, he relinquished a single to center on the first batter of his afternoon, but that gave the Tornados a 3-2 lead entering the bottom half of the inning.

Needing a run to stay alive, the Tigers went 1-2-3 in the bottom half, as they split the weekend series with Talladega.

Campbellsville will now look to return south next weekend as they travel to Point University for a three-game series beginning of Feb. 14th a 1 p.m. ET.
