CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – As the Tigers welcomed in the NAIA's last remaining undefeated team into HIG Field, Campbellsville was able to walk away with a double header split against the Grenadiers.
GAME 1
The first game for the Tigers turned out to be a thriller behind a six-inning outing from
Aaron Hutchinson and a walk off blast off the bat of
Adbiel Morales.
After scoring runs in both the second and the third innings, the Grenadiers were able to counteract the Campbellsville lead with their own set of runs in both the fourth and sixth innings.
However, walks began to hurt the pitching staff of IUSE after a pair of walks and a
Skyler Vail single loaded the based in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases juiced, Morales was able to step up with a two RBI single to score Vail and
Tommy Sepulveda.
Grant McQueary and
Jorge Ortiz both followed with another pair of walks as CU took a 6-3 lead heading into the final inning of game one.
Nonetheless, the Grenadiers countered with a three-spot of their own after Tyler Mills and Branden Hubbard led the inning off with base knocks.
As
Jesse Davis came in to relieve
Hunter McIntosh, a wild pitch scored Mills and a double from John Ullom scored Trevor MacDonald who entered the game to run for Hubbard.
Daunte Decello followed with a groundout to Sepulveda at short, scoring Ullom, for the tying run.
With
Steven Butts in to relieve the eighth, he was able to work around a one out single to bring the Tigers back around to bat in the bottom half of the inning.
Morales played hero ball in the bottom as the Tiger catcher absolutely smoked a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall to give Campbellsville the walk-off victory and give the Grenadiers their first loss of the 2020 campaign.
Morales was able to record three RBIs and a pair of hits to lead the Campbellsville offense.
Butts (1-1) was recorded the win, while Hutchinson was able to toss six innings to only give up two runs.
GAME 2
After a momentous win in game one, the offenses stalled for the first two innings of the second game of the double header. As CU put runners in scoring position in the first two innings, they were unable to pick up timely hits and take an early lead.
With
Eric Little on the mound, with a hitless first two frames, IUSE jumped out to the lead on a two-run home run from Brody Tanksley.
The Grenadiers added on with a run in the fourth and three runs in both the fifth and sixth to bring their run total to nine in the second game.
Campbellsville started to develop some offensive rhythm in the fifth after one out singles from
Cale Thompson,
Colton Titus, and
Jack Bauer put CU on the board.
Jorge Ortiz followed in the bottom half of the sixth with a one-out moonshot over the Tiger bullpen to give the Tigers some life.
Sam Fagerness, pinch hitting in the seventh added on with his own two run bomb, but it was not enough for CU as they fell 9-5.
Thompson and Titus were able to record a pair of hits, while Fagerness and Ortiz recorded the only CU RBIs.
The Tigers will now look towards a huge Mid-South Conference bout this weekend as the No. 11 University of the Cumberlands visits HIG Field on Friday, March 6
th and 3 p.m. ET.
