Tiger bats stall in first two games of MSC play as the Cumberlands take the first two of the series

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The bats went cold for Campbellsville as they opened up Mid-South Conference play on Saturday with the first two games of the weekend series with the University of the Cumberlands.

No. 11 Cumberlands (19-1, 2-0 MSC) was able to limit the offensive attack of the No. 25 Tigers (12-8, 0-2 MSC) to just six hits in 16 innings, winning both games of the doubleheader, 9-0 and 3-0.

GAME 1

With Alexander Salazar (1-3) on the mound for the CU, the Patriots jumped out on the Tiger ace quickly in the first inning as three straight singles to open to game put Campbellsville in a jam. However, Salazar was able to quickly work around three UC baserunners with back-to-back strikeouts and a flyout to end the inning.

Salazar was never able to find a groove as he was only able to work a clean inning in the fourth as a part of his 4.2 inning outing.

The Patriots jumped on top of the Tigers in the third after a pair of singles to lead off the frame and two wild pitches from Salazar helped UC bring in two runs in the inning.

The University of the Cumberlands continued to add on to their lead in the fifth after Ray Villanueva led off with a solo shot. Following the home run, three errors in the frame haunted Campbellsville, bringing two more runs in the inning.

With relievers Steven Butts and Trestyn Demilieu working through the sixth and seventh, the Patriots added two more runs in each of the innings leading Campbellsville, 9-0.

Brenden Nipp and Collin Ledbetter closed the game for the Tigers as CU only allowed one hit in the final two innings.

While the Patriots recorded 13 hits in the game, Colton Easterwood (4-0) held the Tigers to just one hit in through eight innings pitched, recording 10 strikeouts on the afternoon.

GAME 2

The Tiger bats continue to stay cold throughout game two, as Nathan Geissler (3-0) was able to mark it through 5.1 innings with only five hits allowed.

Gage O'Brien got the start for Campbellsville in game two, but much like game one, Villanueva and Pedro Nazario started their game on base for the Patriots. This time, however, UC capitalized and a single from Cadido Encarnacion gave the Patriots an early 2-0 lead.

O'Brien settled in for the second but following a single and three two-out free bases for the Patriots, UC added on another run.

With five hits in the game, Campbellsville was unable to put more than one hit together in an inning, ultimately falling, 3-0.

Colton Titus and Adbiel Morales were each able to record two hits in the game, but it was not enough as the remainder of the Tiger lineup went cold.

The Tigers will look to a 1 p.m. ET start tomorrow as they will try to take at least one game of the three game set with the Patriots.
