MARIETTA, Ga. – A women's wrestling rivalry that has seen its fair share of battles over the years renewed on Friday as the Campbellsville University women's wrestling team earned a dual win over Life University and another win against Brewton-Parker.
#2 Campbellsville – 26 def. #5 Life – 18
CU and Life squared off in the first dual of the day as the match went back and forth early as the Lady Tigers got wins from
Mia Diaz (101) via decision and
McKayla Campbell (109) via tech fall to go up 7-1. The Running Eagles came back to take a lead over the next two matches at 116 lbs. and 123 lbs. as
Charlotte Fowler and
Mia Rodriguez each dropped their matches to make it 9-7 in favor of Life.
From that point on, Campbellsville went on a run of winning four out of the next five matches and scoring at least a point in the fifth match during that stretch.
Katlyn Pizzo (130) earned a forfeit win,
Randi Robison (136) pinned Olivia Mottley,
Emma Walker (143) pinned Angelina Prado, and
Alexandra Castillo (170) earned a tight 3-2 decision to seal the Lady Tiger win at a 26-13 score.
Kendra Thompson (155) and
Liliana Vergara (191) suffered defeats at the tail end of the dual but Thompson was able to score a point for CU and Vergara's match did not have an implications on the dual as a whole with Campbellsville earning the 26-18 win.
#2 Campbellsville – 42 def. RV Brewton-Parker – 5
The second dual for CU started in a similar fashion as Diaz (101) won the opening match via decision followed by a pair of forfeits from Brewton-Parker at 109 lbs. and 116 lbs. to quickly put the Lady Tigers up 13-1.
Campbellsville went on to win the next five head-to-head matchups with four of the five results finishing in pins. Rodriguez earned a pin in 2:44 at 123 lbs., Jacquelin Ghent won a 10-0 tech fall at 130 lbs., Pizzo earned a pin at 136 lbs., Walker had a 24-second pin at 143 lbs., and
Kendra Thompson beat the buzzer with a pin victory with three seconds left in the second period.
Castillo won a forfeit match at 170 lbs. and Vergara dropped another tech fall to close out the dual at a 42-5 Lady Tiger win.
CU women's wrestling will have one more dual remaining in their regular season schedule as they will face University of the Cumberlands on the road on Jan. 29 before preparing for postseason wrestling.
