HENDERSON, Tenn. – Looking to avenge a home loss 10 days ago, the Campbellsville University once again lost a halftime lead to Freed-Hardeman as the Lions earned a 78-71 win Thursday night.
The Tigers held a 44-36 lead after 20 minutes behind strong three-point shooting and one of the best halves of basketball in senior
Alston Davis' two-year stint at Campbellsville.
CU shot 10-for-20 from deep in the half as Davis scored 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from downtown. The six three-pointers from Davis matches his best in a half when he scored his career-high 25 against Bethel on Dec. 3 when he went 6-for-6 from three in the second half of that game.
Campbellsville trailed 22-14 after leading 14-9, then proceeded to go on a 22-7 run to regain the lead and pull it to 36-29 before eventually entering the halftime break up by eight points. Defensively in the opening half, the Tigers held FHU to 14-of-37 (37.8%) shooting from the field and forced seven Lions' turnovers that led to nine CU points.
It was a tough start to the second half for the Tigers as Freed-Hardeman got off to a 15-3 run to start the first 6:35 of the half to go ahead 51-47. Campbellsville kept it within a one-possession game until about four minutes remained in the game when Lions jumped out to an eight-point lead and eventually a 10-point lead at 74-64 with 3:04 left.
The Tigers' three-point shooting feel off in a major way in the second half as they only hit two of their 12 attempts from distance in the half and Davis only attempted two shots and missed both in the second half.
That shooting struggles didn't stop CU from attempting a comeback in the final three minutes as they pulled it to a 74-71 FHU lead with 21 seconds left but couldn't pull through as the Lions hit four clutch free throws and the Tigers couldn't convert on the offensive end.
Taiveyhon Mason ended the game as the scoring leader for Cu as he finished with 22 points, three rebounds, and two assists as Davis finished the game with those 18 first half points and
Max Reyes added 11 points.
Kortland Martin led all players in scoring with 23 as he also led all players in scoring in the earlier meeting this season. Wanya King and Logan Bonds both scored double figures as King didn't suit up in the game 10 days ago and Bonds only scored three points on Jan. 11.
It will be a quick turnaround and a trip to McKenzie, Tenn. for Campbellsville as they will face Bethel University on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT at Crisp Arena.
