Pour offensive night can't overcome tough Lewis Flyer team; Tigers fall in four sets

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — The second-ranked Campbellsville Tigers traveled to NCAA DII Lewis University – the fifth ranked team at the Division II level – and lost their second game in four sets.

The Tigers (2-2) were able to pull out a nail-biting third set but Lewis was too much for CU overall, 25-9, 25-16, 30-32, 25-16.

Campbellsville's hitting percentage of -.176 was the lowest in any set all season and the Tigers could never recover. CU finished with only four kills on 17 attacks and had seven error compared to only six kills for the Flyers (1-0).  The difference maker was seven aces for Lewis, five blocks, and only one attack error in the opening frame.

In set two, it was much of the same as the Flyers hit .368 compared to Campbellsville's .105.

The third set was much more like two top men's volleyball programs trading punches like prized fighters. The Tigers finished with 20 kills in the third frame – which is a season-high in any set this season. In addition, Lewis only had two blocks and one aces – which were both set-lows in the match. The 10 service aces by Lewis in the third frame was a set-up for the Flyers.

Campbellsville finished the third set hitting a match-high .457 to win in extra points, 32-30.

The fourth set went right back to the Flyers as CU's couldn't control the block and finished with four service errors and nine attacking errors. Lewis also hit a season-high .591 in the fourth set to seal the win.

The Tigers were led by Ramon Matos' 10 kills on 16 attacks while he hit .556 overall. Noah Henkel and Ryan Smith also were above .500 in the attacking percentage, but newcomer Ho Leung struggled from the floor with only three kills on 11 attacks and five errors to hit -.182.

Smith finished the night with 33 assists, while Jay Montalvo led the Tigers with 11 digs.

Campbellsville gets back in action looking to move above .500 with the NCCAA Invitational this weekend hosted at Carolina University in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Tigers play Carolina on Friday at 2 p.m. ET and Lancaster Bible College on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. ET. The NCCAA finals are set at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday as CU looks to win back-to-back championships.
