BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Kicking off the 2021 portion of the schedule at the Mid-South Conference hosted Vette City Classic, the Campbellsville University women's volleyball team clinched a 3-2 win over University of the Cumberlands Friday night.
 
The Patriots were able to win the first set before CU won the second and third before Cumberlands forced the fifth set as the set scores went 23-25, 25-14, 25-18, 18-25, 15-6.
 
With the closest margin of set win being seven points in the fourth of the Lady Tigers, they were able to pull away in each set using strong runs early in each set to cruise to those set victories. In the second set, CU started by jumping out in front 7-0, in the third they had a 4-0 run to climb to up 8-3, and in the fifth set they started ahead 6-0 to close out the match on top.
 
Campbellsville's usual suspects of 
Sonia Flendrich and 
Sutton Mason both finished with double digit kills as Flendrich led the team with 11 and Mason added 10. Freshman 
Hannah McGill emerged as a key player as the lefty swinger finished with nine kills in the match while adding two block assists.
 
Setter 
Paige Merrick was two kills away from her second triple-double of the season as she had eight kills while finishing with 35 assists and adding 11 digs. Flendrich also recorded a double-double with 19 digs of her own with libero 
Katie Morin leading the team with 24 total digs in the match as the Secor, Ill. native added a team-high four aces.
 
Cumberlands had strong individual performances on the attack as Emily Prewitt and Olivia Verdecchia finished with 15 and 14 kills respectively as both had hitting percentages over .300. Setter Savannah Schwarz had 44 assists and 14 digs for a double-double of her own with both Ashley Sobocinski (15) and Jennifer Stein (20) finishing with double digit digs.
 
The Lady Tigers will get back to the court in Bowling Green, Ky. tomorrow starting at 1:30 p.m. ET when they face both Shawnee State and Cumberland at 1:30 and 5 p.m. ET respectively.
