CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Down 13 points at halftime, the Campbellsville University men's basketball team was able to make it a two-point game with 41 seconds remaining but were unable to complete the comeback as Thomas More University escaped with an 82-78 win.
Sophomore
Max Reyes poured in a career-high 28 points in the losing effort as Reyes was inserted into the starting lineup due to an injury to
Alston Davis. Reyes scored his 28 points on 11-for-18 shooting from the field while going 5-for-7 from three-point range.
He was joined in double figures by
Taiveyhon Mason and
Sam Weining as Mason scored 23 points but took 24 shots to get there while adding four rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Weining hit some clutch three pointers in the second half as he went 4-for-7 from the field overall to finish with 12 points.
Senior Forward
Lenorris Mincey put up a strong rebounding effort, finishing with a team-high nine while adding five points and a pair of blocks. The final of his two blocks came in a potential game saving effort as CU trailed by four points with 50 seconds remaining, TMU's Reid Jolly escaped deep on a baseline out of bounds for a breakaway layup but Mincey was able to hustle back and get a chase down block allowing the Tigers to regain possession.
Mason came back down the other end and nailed a layup to make it an 80-78 game with about 41 seconds remaining. With about 10 seconds separating the game clock and the shot clock, Campbellsville elected to play defense as Ryan Batte was able to finish a layup with 21 seconds left to lead to the 82-78 final score.
Batte and Jolly led the Saints in scoring as Batte had a game-high 30 points followed by a Jolly's 18-point, 12-rebound double-double. Garren Bertsch (14) and Luke Rudy (11) each added double figures for Thomas More as only six players scored in total for the Saints in the game.
TMU's 13-point halftime lead came off of hot shooting overall and especially from three-point range as they went 18-of-29 (62.1%) from the field and 9-of-15 (60%) from three-point range in the first 20 minutes. Campbellsville pulled to within five points at 40-35 but the Saints were able to finish the half on an 8-0 run to make it 48-35 at the break.
The Tigers will remain on the road for their next Mid-South Conference matchup with Shawnee State University this Saturday at 2 p.m. ET in Portsmouth, Ohio. The game was originally scheduled for 4 p.m. ET but the game was recently moved up two hours with no women's game preceding it.
