CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – In their first official competition of the season, the Campbellsville University women's wrestling team was able to earn a 39-9 victory against Indiana Tech at the CU Wrestling Gym on Friday night.
The night started with the Lady Tigers honoring their four seniors of
McKayla Campbell,
Katlyn Pizzo,
Alexia Foca, and
Courtney West. What followed was a bit of a tight dual to start before CU found a way to pull away starting at the 123 lbs. match.
The first three matches saw the Warriors outscore Campbellsville 9-5 after earning a forfeit win in the 101 lbs. match and a tech fall win for Korigan Wilkey over
Katelin Barnett. Barnett was able to at least score a team point for the Lady Tigers in her loss and Campbell earned a second period tech fall to score four points for Campbellsville.
From the 123 lbs. match on it was all CU as
Mia Rodriguez earned a fall victory in just 49 seconds to give the Lady Tigers a 10-9 lead that they would never relinquish.
"The team looked great tonight," head coach
Lee Miracle said. "Even without a bunch of our starters and returning all Americans, our back-ups and third string showed that they have good solid fundamentals and they're developing and learning just as fast as our superstars."
The remainder of the match finished with four of the next five results being pin victories Campbellsville as Pizzo (130),
Randi Robison (136),
Kendra Thompson (155), and
Cassandra Smith (170) were all able to pin their opponents' shoulders to the mat in the first period of their matches.
Emma Walker earned a tech fall at 143 lbs. to score four points for CU as she was able to score 10 points as quickly as 54 seconds into the match.
Liliana Vergara closed out the dual with a forfeit win at 191 lbs. to seal the 39-9 Campbellsville victory.
This was a great example of why depth is so important in wrestling," Miracle said. "With COVID interfering you never know what the starting lineup will look like. It was great to have a Senior night. These girls have missed a lot and I'm happy we could recognize them. If you put in four years of wrestling with this program, you deserve some recognition."
Next up for the Lady Tigers will be a pair of duals in Marietta, Ga. when they will face off against Brewton-Parker and Life on Friday, Jan. 15.
