CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – After a sluggish start, the Campbellsville University women's volleyball team was able to coalesce and contribute another win to their totals for both the season and in Mid-South Conference play.
The Lady Tigers scored the first four points of the first set but from there never really separated themselves from Pikeville. The Bears showed strength battling against Campbellsville's attack. It would be a back-and-forth affair with the Lady Tigers separating themselves from Pikeville at 22-21 to take the close first set 25-23.
The second set began with both team's offenses going blow-for-blow until the Lady Tigers rallied and scored nine straight. In that stretch, three of four of
Cierra Merrick's serves were aces. The middle of the set saw the lead balloon and Campbellsville women's volleyball never looked back taking the second frame 25-14.
In the third set,
Alina Zellin recorded four kills and a block assist. The Lady Tigers needed her performance as UPike began the set scoring the first seven points. From that point on, Campbellsville outscored the Bears 25-7 to end the match in a sweep. When all was said and done, the Lady Tigers had 18 more assists than UPike in large part due to
Paige Merrick and her 31 assists. This game was her 11
th in a row with at least 20 assists.
The Campbellsville University women's volleyball team will get little rest as they host the second night of a back-to-back for their next match. That game will be the Lady Tigers' annual "Dig Pink" game for breast cancer awareness and will take place exactly 24 hours from tonight's first serve at 7 p.m. ET.
