CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The (RV) Campbellsville University men's soccer team was unable to surmount the #21 Cumberland University Phoenix Wednesday night falling 2-1.
Within the first minute of the contest, the Phoenix were awarded a penalty kick which they converted. From that point on, the ball bounced back-and-forth across the pitch and possession traded time and time again. The entire first half was a battle of methodical play, each team picking their spots of attack carefully. At the half, each team had recorded five shots.
The second half was similar to the first except with increased energy. The Tigers were able to establish cleaner chances on goal and were winning more 50/50 balls. Shots were traded in nearly identical measure too (ultimately 13 for the match for the Phoenix and 11 for the Tigers). The difference would come down to the minutiae and that detail fell in Cumberland's favor. In the 78
th minute, the Phoenix would raise their advantage over the Tigers to 2-0 when they chipped a shot over keeper
Jeremi Campagnolo.
From that point on, it seemed that the Tigers kicked their aggression into overdrive. Only eight minutes after Cumberland's second goal,
Samuel Londono cut the lead in half from an assist by
Diego Chainho. Despite continuing to challenge the Phoenix defense, the Tigers' rally was too late and the horn sounded on the match.
The Tigers will be back at Finley Stadium on Saturday October 23 at 8 p.m. ET to face off against the University of Tennessee Southern Firehawks.
