Campbellsville wins five-set instant classic in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The Campbellsville Lady Tigers won another five-set match against Mid-South Conference foe Georgetown College on Tuesday night behind Sonia Flendrich's season-highs in kills, aces, and digs.

Service Aces fueled Campbellsville's 9-2 run from the start. Georgetown would try to answer the call, but Campbellsville slammed the door shut. CU would close out the set on a 7-0 run, winning 25-11.

The Tigers of Georgetown showed some fight of their own while down early in the match. GC held a nine-point lead before Campbellsville cut the deficit to 15-10 forcing a timeout. Out of the break, Georgetown kept the momentum for the remainder of the set after trading runs, 25-20.

Frame three lived up to the name: "Battle of the Tigers." For most of this game, neither team would hold more than a three-point advantage. CU used a block assist from Paige Merrick and Cierra Merrick followed by a kill from Flendrich to cap off the battle 25-22.

GC would once again come out swinging to a large lead. Their 9-2 start would slowly decrease over duration of the frame. The front wall of Julia Whiting, Alina Zellin, and Flendirch paved a pivotal role in the comeback. After a handful of blocks and kills, CU locked the set up at 14. Both clubs would battle until they were tied once again at 22. Georgetown College edged out a 26-24 set victory.

For the third straight set in a row, GC would start on a run. 12-6 would be the advantage for Georgetown. Campbellsville would force two errors and a Paige Merrick dig that turned into a kill which led to a time out. CU would score another point to bring it to 13-11. GC would score, gifting them three straight match points. Flendrich and Whiting, as well as a Georgetown attack, error saw the Lady Tigers knot it up at 14. Battling in a point tug-of-war, Katie Morin gave Campbellsville their first lead in extra time with a service ace. With points climbing, Georgetown wouldn't give an inch with a kill that took the teams to 19 all and then to a 20-19 lead. It was time for Flendrich to respond again and she did. An attack error gave CU it's fourth match point and Julia Whiting and Alina Zellin combined for a block assist to win the instant classic at 23-21.

The Lady Tigers return to action this Thursday in McKenzie, Tennessee against Bethel University on Thursday November 4th at 8 p.m. ET. IT will be the second of three straight road games to end regular season play.
