Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | CU Athletics

Despite a better shooting second half, the Tigers lose to Saint Xavier

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University's men's basketball team fought to keep up with Saint Xavier (Ill.) but were unsuccessful in their attempt to even the score. The Tigers left Powell Athletic Center trailing Saint Xavier in a 58-72 final.

The Tigers had a slow start in the first half. Saint Xavier had the Tigers off balance as they won the tip and scored first. The Cougars offense put pressure on Campbellsville leading them to switch to man-to-man defense. The Tigers ended the first half with an 18% shooting percentage and only hitting one three.

In the second, the Tigers were working against Saint Xavier's zone defense. Campbellsville was able to keep up with the Cougars point wise (SXU scoring 40 and CU scoring 38) which would have made it a different ball game if not for the dismal shooting performance first half.

Offensively, shots were just not falling for the Tigers at Powell Athletic Center. At the end of the game, Campbellsville went 21-71 in field goals resulting in a shooting percentage of 29.6%. Despite offensive issues, Peyton Broughton (23 points) and Malachi de Sousa (11 points) were able to contribute effectively.

The Tiger defense was able to interfere with Saint Xavier's plans causing them to have 19 turnovers compared to Campbellsville's nine. Jace Wallace and Jarius Key held out for Campbellsville as they led the team in rebounds. Wallace had five defense rebounds (nine total) and, off the bench, Key finished with five rebounds himself.

The Campbellsville University men's basketball team will be heading to Bowling Green, Ky. Monday night to compete against Western Kentucky University in an exhibition. That game will begin at 8 p.m. ET.
