CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Tuesday night, the Campbellsville University women's volleyball team fell to the Cumberland University Phoenix in straight sets.
The Phoenix came out of the gate strong, and miscommunication plagued several rallies by the Lady Tigers. Despite dropping it 25-16, set one saw senior
Sonia Flendrich record her 1,000
th kill for her career. Both her and fellow senior
Paige Merrick were honored after the first set with signed balls from their fellow teammates. Merrick has tallied over 3,500 assists in her career and would end the match with 22.
The second set started with five straight points for the Lady Tigers, but Cumberland roared back with a 11-2 point streak and established control of the set. Campbellsville had freshmen duo
Cierra Merrick (seven total kills for the match) and
Molly Shannon (eight total kills) bring big offense in the set, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Phoenix, 25-19.
The third set proved to be the third and final. The first seven points were Campbellsville's, and they led most of the set. Eventually, Cumberland would fight back and tie the game 20-20. From that point, the Phoenix outscored the Lady Tigers 5-1.
Campbellsville University's women's volleyball will play again Thursday night at Gosser Gymnasium against #16 Lindsey Wilson College for Homecoming at 7 p.m. ET.
