CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The freshman
Molly Shannon tallied a season, career, and a team season-high 19 kills on Thursday night. The Lady Tigers knocked off #16 Lindsey Wilson to improve to 16-4, now sitting at 7-2 inside of conference play.
Set one lived up to the Battle of Highway 55 rivalry with both clubs trading blows like two prizefighters. Neither club had more than a four-point advantage the entire set. The Lady Tigers'
Cierra Merrick would drive a ball to the hardwood and
Sutton Mason picked up a service ace to close it out, 25-22.
The #16 Blue Raiders wouldn't back down from the challenge. They came out blistering hot in frame two. LWC would finish with a 25-20 victory, carrying a .279 hitting percentage.
The third game was a mirror of the first. Neither club would have more than a five-point lead. With the match sitting at 23 each, Campbellsville would call on a pair of upperclassmen to come up in the clutch.
Alina Zellin would smash a ball right down the middle followed by a
Sonia Flendrich ace to send Gosser Gymnasium in an uproar. CU would have a 2-1 lead after the 25-23 victory.
Lindsey Wilson would come out of the break on a 12-6 run. Shannon and Zellin then fueled a 9-1 answer for Campbellsville, taking the 15-13 lead. From this point on, the teams would go point-for-point until the set was knotted at 22. Campbellsville had the 24-23 set lead heading into a timeout. Out of the break, CU would call on the hot hand of Shannon to cap off the victory.
Shannon and Zellin combined for 36 kills, ending with 19 and 15 respectively.
Paige Merrick added another double-double finishing with 46 assists and 12 digs. Shannon found herself with 12 digs to pair with her 19 kills.
Salma Gonzalez-Sosa led CU with 22 digs defensively.
As a team, the Lady Tigers had 59 kills, 55 assists, 74 digs, and 11 service aces.
