Tigers seek to defend Homecoming against UPike

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – It's Homecoming weekend in Campbellsville and the Fighting Tigers (0-3) seek to best their Mid-South Conference opponent: the Bears of the University of Pikeville (2-1) (0-1 MSC). The game is set to begin at 2:01 p.m. ET Saturday at Finley Stadium in Campbellsville.

Zach Clements and Brett Sowell will host the airwaves for the CU Sports Network on 88.7 The Tiger locally, as well as worldwide online at www.campbellsvilletigers.com/watch.

TIGER NOTES
  • The Tigers eclipsed more than 300 yards for the first time this season last week in their loss against the Thomas More Saints.
  • Last week, D'Anta Sipp and Dequantay Shannon both ran for over 50 yards while quarterback Chase Elmore gained 26 yards on the ground himself. Elmore also captured two rushing touchdowns.
  • Junior Zac Cole will look to have back-to-back games with a receiving touchdown after hauling in a fourth quarter touchdown last game. Tate Pringle will look to have his receiving game kickstarted after recording five receptions in the Tigers' first contest and only three in their previous two games combined.
  • Freshman linebacker Jacoby Miguel leads the Tigers in tackles with 12 through three games. Defensive backs Xavier Newland and Kobe Reese are just behind with 11 each.
  • Sophomore Kel Hawkins is tearing up all-purpose yards this year averaging just over 178 yards per game and 29 yards per return. Hawkins took a kickoff return to the house against Thomas More last week.
  • The Tigers' run defense is aiming to enforce their will against the Bears. Of the 480 yards allowed per game this season 354 of them are rushing yards.

SCOUTING PIKEVILLE
  • Pikeville is coming off a loss to the (8) Georgetown College Tigers 14-52 after scoring over 50 points themselves in their first two games of the season. Quarterback Lee Kirkland threw for 273 yards, two touchdowns, and four interceptions in the defeat. Despite those interceptions, Garland's quarter back rating for the season is still 126.45.
  • The Bears had more total offense than the Georgetown Tigers (369-341) and snapped 25 more plays as well. The difference was the interceptions: the Tigers returned three of their four interceptions for touchdowns.
  • The Bears' leading rusher is Alex Sanders with 84 yards a game. Lead wide receiver Arites Clark is bringing home over 75 yards receiving each game. Freshmen linebacker Jonathan Morton and senior linebacker Alexander Carmichael both lead the Bears with 23 tackles.
  • Pikeville is averaging nearly 42 points per contest, 488 yards of offense, 376 yards allowed, and 62 penalty yards per game. Those penalty yards nearly double the disciplined Fighting Tigers who boast only 37 penalty yards a game.
MATCHUP HISTORY
  • The Tigers are 9-7 all-time when squaring off against the University of Pikeville Bears.
  • Their most recent matchup was earlier this year on February 26, 2021, when the Tigers eked out a win 14-13. The Tigers were able to turnover Pikeville four times including a late muffed punt. Both Jon Carrothers and Grover Russell led CU in tackles as they both totaled 10 with Russell racking up more solo tackles (5) and Carrothers assisting on more (7).
  • The first ever game between the two schools was on November 3, 2001 when the Tigers pulled out a ten point victory over the Bears, 43-33. The longest win streak across those 16 games was between September 23, 2006 and October 2, 2010 when the Tigers rattled off four straight wins.
  • The last time either team won two games in a row was back in 2011 and 2012 when Pikeville had a two-game winning streak in the match-up. Ever since, the winner has alternated back-and-forth between the two teams.

LOOKING AHEAD
  • The next game for Campbellsville will see Tigers take on the Cumberland University Phoenix. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, October 16 at 1:30 p.m. ET.
