WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Campbellsville University men's basketball team emerges from the University of the Cumberlands Classic with two victories after besting the Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers Friday afternoon 94-86.
IU Southeast won the tip but the Tigers were the first to score from a
Peyton Broughton three-pointer. From there, Campbellsville was able to maintain a small cushion of a lead that would reach its first half peak of 12 around the 13-minute mark. The Grenadiers would not lay down though and the lead the Tigers enjoyed halfway through the first half would shrink to only three entering halftime.
The Tigers were able to rattle off five threes in the opening half (38.5% three-point shooting) and held IU Southeast to none. The overall shooting percentages, turnovers, and rebounds for both teams were all virtually even. It was the Tigers' bench scoring that was the most lopsided category.
Keaston Brown came off the bench firing shooting 5-7 in the first half and leading the team in points with 11.
Javaughn Smith also chipped in from the pine adding five points of his own.
Quickly in the last half Campbellsville extended their lead back to eight after heating up from the perimeter.
Cameron Carmical,
Sam Weining,
Jarius Key, and Broughton all made threes in the first five minutes. The Tigers' lead would ultimately stretch to 18 points before the game ended with Campbellsville maintaining their double-digit lead for most of the half.
Campbellsville ended the game with a staggering 40-point explosion from their bench. De Sousa (13) joined in with Brown (13) and Smith (11) to share most of the second unit's points. It would be Broughton who ended with a team-high 20 points.
Jace Wallace posted a great all-around game with 15 points, six rebounds, and four assists. The Tigers doubled the total assists of the Grenadiers: 20-10.
The Tigers will take the court next on Thursday November 18
th when they have their first Mid-South Conference game against the University of Pikeville Bears. That contest will begin at 8 p.m. ET.
