CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Tigers hosted the opening round of the Mid-South Conference tournament at Finley Stadium this evening. Campbellsville's matchup was against Shawnee State University. The Tigers left the stadium victorious with a score of 3-1 over the Bears.
When playing Shawnee State in the regular season, Campbellsville defeated the Bears 6-0. The Tigers came into the game looking to advance to the next round of the tournament, but not expecting the Bears to go down easily.
Within the first half, the Tigers were able to earn themselves a goal. After exhaustive efforts toward the Bear's goal and several attempts,
Eleder Goicoechea danced around the defender and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper. Campbellsville's strong offense allowed them to gain four corner kicks as well. However, the Tigers weren't able to lock down a goal for the rest of the half.
Campbellsville lost their lead when Shawnee State was able to score a goal in the 64
thminute. However, the Tigers were able to score twice more to win back the lead. Goicoechea was able to hit the net again for the Tigers while
Sebastiano Musu connected with a shot granted by a penalty kick in the 75
th minute.
Defensively, the Tigers stood their ground tonight. Shawnee State was not allowed very many goal attempts as Campbellsville took ahold of possession. The Bears had 5 shots on goal and 4 of them were saved by Tigers goalie
Jeremi Campagnolo.
The Tigers advance to the next round of the Mid-South Conference tournament. Campbellsville will travel to University of the Cumberlands to compete against the Patriots this Friday at 6 p.m. ET.
