The Tigers show no quit in loss to Patriots in MSC Quarterfinals

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The sixth-seeded Campbellsville University men's soccer team were upset in the last five minutes and eliminated from the Mid-South Conference Tournament by the third-seeded University of the Cumberlands Patriots Friday night: 2-1.

Cumberlands came out insistent on scoring and they were able to do just that in the 3rd minute. A cross from the right of the box flew in for a header that zipped by Jeremi Campagnolo. The first ten minutes would see the Patriots with superior pitch control. As the half progressed though, the ball found its way to the feet of the Tigers. Sebastiano Musu, Samuel Londono, and Tom Edge all attempted shots in the subsequent ten minutes but were able to find paydirt.

There were occasional fast breaks and breakdowns from both teams, but no additional goals would be scored in the first half. One shot of Cumberlands was blocked while another was high in minutes 34 and 35. Before the midway horn would sound, Musu would get another chance that went wide left and a header by Pedro Ramos off a beautiful pass by Matys Savigny just sailed away. The first half numbers for both teams were similar save for the single, quick goal at the start.

The Patriots came out firing again early in the second half. However, Campagnolo saved the 46th minute header. As the teams battled for possession, the desperation by both to succeed swept through their strategy. A header by Savigny looked good but met the crossbar and bounced down and out. Musu was there for the rebound but didn't get all of the ball so the Patriots attempted a clear. That ball fell at the feet of Jairo Fernandez who nearly snuck the ball in the top-left corner of the goal but it went outside nonetheless.

It wouldn't be long before Connor Grant found the net for the Tigers from a Pedro Ramos corner in the 69th minute. Only about a minute later Ramos had a try to take the lead but the shot was high. Four rapid shots from Cumberlands would follow in the 73rd, 74th, and 75th minutes (wide, saved, blocked, and wide respectively). The next three chances would be the Tigers' but none translated. Then, in the 86th minute on a breakaway, the Patriots broke down the defense and took the lead. Despite a header try by Ramos in the 90th minute, Campbellsville would end the match with a loss.

When all was said and done, the University of the Cumberlands Patriots kicked five shots-on-goal compared to the Tigers' two. Campagnolo ended the match with three saves.

The Campbellsville University Tigers will now await the finish of the Mid-South Conference Tournament to see if they are selected as an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament.
