CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Lady Tiger volleyball hosted the NCCAA Mid-East Regional championship against Oakland City University at Gosser Gymnasium this afternoon and were victorious 3-0.
Campbellsville defeated Oakland City during regular season with a 3-0 sweep. The Lady Tigers went into today's match with the same winning mentality. The result of this game would determine who would continue to the NCCAA National Tournament and who would put an end to their season.
The starters for the last home game of the year were
Sonia Flendrich,
Cierra Merrick,
Paige Merrick,
Taylor Thacker,
Julia Whiting, and
Alina Zellin. The Lady Tigers began the game strong as they went on a six-point run. A handful of Oakland City errors and Campbellsville blocks allowed the Lady Tigers to achieve this lead. A methodical Campbellsville offense racked up points against their opponent as Oakland City was not able to cover hot spots on the court. Campbellsville played most of the set capitalizing off Mighty Oaks errors and putting the ball into open zones. The first set was taken by the Lady Tigers as
Cierra Merrick executed a kill ending the match 25-17.
The second match was similar to the first as Campbellsville took the first point. The score remained tight due to Oakland City increasing coverage and executing a few blocks. The Mighty Oaks found their grit to tie up the game at 10-10. Campbellsville was thrown off balance by the change of pace and increased their error count. Oakland City took the lead off Campbellsville attack errors. After a three-point run, the Lady Tigers were finally able to break their lead and breach Oakland's point value at 15-14. The match ended in a score of 25-18 as Flendrich executed a roll over the net.
The third set seemed promising as the Lady Tigers scored first yet again. Campbellsville gained from Oakland City's lack of coverage. Oakland City just couldn't keep up as the Lady Tigers blew past them. Campbellsville continued to gain ground as they ended the set 25-15.
Paige Merrick took matters in her own hands as she saw an opportunity to push the ball to the open corner to solidify the win.
Campbellsville ended the match with a total of 105 attacks and doubled Oakland City's kill count. Zellin led the team with 10 kills, Whiting followed with seven, and
Stela Velinova shared five with
Molly Shannon.
Salma Gonzalez-Sosa finished the day with 19 out of the 49 total digs.
The Lady Tigers will travel to Point Lookout, Missouri to compete in the NCCAA National Tournament. The Tournament will be hosted December 2
nd- 4
th 2021 by the College of the Ozarks.
