Lady Tiger Basketball wins battle against Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – A back-and-forth contest between the Lady Tigers and the Patriots ends with a single possession win for Campbellsville 86-84.

The Lady Tigers traveled to Williamsburg, Ky. for their second conference match-up of the season. The starting line-up looked a little different for the Lady Tigers with Lauren Lee in place of Courtney Pritchett. Along with Lee was Faith Lake, Lexy Lake, Ashley McGeorge, and Bailey Pedigo starting for the game. To start off, CU won the tip and the action began. In the first quarter, the Patriots and the Lady Tigers were trading points. After the first, Campbellsville only had a one-point lead: 20-19.

The intensity of the game didn't slow down in the second quarter either. With four minutes left until halftime, Cumberlands still had the Lady Tigers within one point. The Patriots turned the ball over a few times in a row giving CU a few more possessions to stretch out their lead. The last few possessions before halftime consisted of a huge Lady Tiger three, a steal by Shlya Calbert, and another bucket in the paint by Kaitlynn Wilks. That run gave CU a six-point lead, 40-34, going into halftime. The Lady Tigers have seven players on the board and Lee leads the team with 10 points. CU's field goal percentage was almost 20% more than UC's (62% to 44%). The Lady Tigers had 13 turnovers while the Patriots had 10. Off those 10 turnovers, CU scored 11 points, and off the Lady Tigers' 13 turnovers the Patriots had 18 points.

Four minutes into the third quarter, the Patriots fought back and tied up the game: 45-45. The tied ball game was short lived thanks to the Lady Tigers' 5-0 run. In the middle of that run, a Cumberlands player committed an intentional foul. Then, the intensity stirred back up again; UC made a few shots and another intentional foul was committed, but this time it was Campbellsville's Calbert. Towards the end of the third, both teams spent a lot of time at the free throw line. The Lady Tigers then faced their second shot-clock violation giving the Patriots one last possession for the quarter. The third quarter ended with the Lady Tigers, once again, up by one: 63-62. However, UC outscored CU in this quarter: 28-23.

In the fourth quarter, both teams were still going back-and-forth. The majority of the points came from free-throws and in the paint. With three minutes left in the game, Cumberlands tied it up and then shortly got the ball back and took a two-point lead. The Patriots hit a huge three with 35 seconds left in the game which gave them a one-point lead and the Lady Tigers the possession. 13 seconds left in the game it was a one-point lead again, but this time the Lady Tigers had it. Wilks hit the bucket that gave CU the lead and then had a huge block on the other end of the floor which gave the Lady Tigers the ball back. Calbert was fouled under the basket which gave CU two free throws. Sarah Sutton made those free throws which led to a Lady Tiger victory: 86-84. Three Lady Tigers had career high games. Lee led the game with 18 points, Wilks close behind her with 17, and Calbert with 15. Pedigo also tied her career high with 14 points.

The Lady Tigers are back in action November 29th at the Powell Athletic Center where they will face Bryant Stratton College. The game will start at 2 p.m. ET.
