CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University women's basketball team faced the Freed-Hardeman Lions at Powell Athletic Center Thursday night and were victorious 67-56.
The intensity was high on the Donna Wise Court as the game tipped off. Ashlee McGeorge, Lexy Lake, Faith Lake, Bailey Pedigo, and Courtney Pritchett started for the Lady Tigers. After winning the tip, Pedigo was able to score first with an assist from Lexy Lake. Faith Lake was able to sink a basket after the Lady Tigers won the ball back, making the score 4-0. Faith Lake drew a foul under the basket where she went 2-2 at the free throw line. Campbellsville won back possession which allowed Pritchett to score two leaving the score 8-0. At that point, both teams were pushing the ball up the court. Freed-Hardeman broke the scoring run with a layup. The Lady Tigers remained perfect at the free-throw line as Kaitlyn Wilks was awarded a 1-1. The first quarter ended with the Lady Tigers leading 13-11.
Campbellsville displayed their offensive potency as they were first to score a minute and forty seconds into the second quarter with Pritchett's jumper. Lexy Lake followed her with another jump shot. Pedigo continued the perfect record at the free throw as she went 2-2. The Lions were edging up their defense under the goal making it hard for the Lady Tigers to drive to the basket. Freed-Hardeman remained without a lead throughout the half.
In the first half, Campbellsville's field goal percentage stood at 47.4 percent whereas Freed-Hardeman ended with a 31.3 percent. Neither team could muster a three-pointer out of their attempts. Both the Lady Tigers and the Lions were consistent in their defense making the game a nail-biting experience.
To begin the third, Campbellsville came out firing. There were three consecutive threes put up by Pedigo and two from Lexy Lake. Both the Lions and The Lady Tigers were playing hard defense. Campbellsville didn't allow many passes for Freed-Hardeman resulting in them having to drive to the basket to score. The Lady Tigers produced traps on anyone with the ball to cause a turn of possession. Campbellsville ensured every chance at a free basket as they went 100% at the free throw out of their 11 attempts. The third quarter ended 48-41 with the Lady Tigers leading.
The final quarter was a high-intensity ball game. Both teams played fast-paced offense to match their locked-in defense. Campbellsville remained strong under the basket as Wilks was able to put up numbers. Four minutes into the quarter, both teams were only rewarded with four points each. Campbellsville produced 12 turnovers at this point but recovered with solid defense. Pritchett was able to score a layup and draw a foul resulting in a score of 57-48 with 3:28 left of play. The Lady Tigers were resilient as they ended the contest with as much energy as they started with. Campbellsville had a ten-point lead with a minute remaining. Pedigo finished the match by making her two free throws that she was awarded with .3 seconds left on the board. The Lady Tigers won with a score of 67-56.
Offensively, Wilks led the team with 16 points, then Pedigo with 13 points, and Lauren Lee with 12 points. The Lady Tigers were 20-22 at the free throw line. Pedigo locked down on defense while going 8-8 at the line. Lee went 6-6 from the charity stripe.
Campbellsville will return to Powell Athletic Center this Saturday. The Lady Tigers will match-up against Bethel University at 2 p.m. ET. The contest will be proceeded by the Dr. Donna Wise court dedication.
