LEBANON, Tenn. – #1 Campbellsville University women's basketball (10-0, 6-0 MSC) was on the road to face off against the Cumberland University Phoenix (Tenn.) (5-7, 1-5 MSC) in a Mid-South Conference contest Saturday afternoon. The Lady Tigers left the arena victorious 72-60.
Cumberland University put points up first. A pair of free throws by Ashley McGeorge and a jumper by
Courtney Pritchett allow the Lady Tigers to take the lead though at 4-3. Both the Phoenix and the Lady Tigers kept up tough defense during the first quarter which flipped the lead often.
Bailey Pedigo hit a reverse layup to take the Lady Tigers back in front 10-9 . Neither team had greater than a three-point lead until
Lauren Lee appeared at the free-throw line to make the score 18-13. Kaitlyn Wilks scored last in the first quarter to end in a score of 20-16 in Campbellsville's favor.
The second quarter began with
Sarah Sutton pulling up with a three-pointer allowing a seven-point Lady Tiger lead. However, Cumberland University closed this gap as they went on a six-point run causing the Lady Tigers to only lead by one. Campbellsville struggled to keep up the tempo as they were only able to accumulate 12 points within the quarter. At that point, Campbellsville stood at 10-percent in three-point field goals down from their 38.7 percent season average. The half ended with the Lady Tigers trailing the Phoenix 33-32, the first time that has happened this season.
In the first half, Campbellsville followed the Phoenix in field goal percentage accruing 41.9 percent compared to Cumberland's 48.1 percent. The Lady Tigers averaged a 51.8 field goal percentage per game in the first nine contests. McGeorge led the team with eight points and Wilks followed her with seven. Guard Pedigo collected a team-high four rebounds.
The third quarter was similar to the first as McGeorge drew a foul low in the block to appear at the charity line. McGeorge went 1-2 to even the score at 33-33. Cumberland seemed persistent in their trek to keep up with the Lady Tigers. This intensity displayed by the Phoenix caused Campbellsville to only lead by two, and Campbellsville opted to transition from their full-court zone defense. However, Cumberland was able to get a basket under the net binding the score at 41-41. With one minute left, Cumberland secured their largest lead of the game with four. Sutton pulled up on the arc to shorten the gap for the Lady Tigers. Lee then drove to the basket to earn a layup and a free throw with seven seconds left. After three, the score was 50-48 in the Lady Tigers' favor.
To open the fourth quarter,
Faith Lake scored for the Lady Tigers after capitalizing off an offensive rebound for a layup. From there Campbellsville began increase their distance. Pritchett made a layup assisted by Lee and then would nail two free throws shortly after.
Lexy Lake was firing as she ensured the largest lead of the game at 16-points with a three-point basket. Campbellsville closed out the game 73-60.
At game's end, Lee led the team with 15 points. McGeorge and Pritchett each had 13 points and Wilks posted nine of her own off the bench. Pedigo finished with six rebounds and Pritchett with six assists. Campbellsville fell short of their game averages in today's competition as they went 47.2 percent at the field goal and 25 percent at the perimeter. However, Campbellsville was exceptionally dominant in their free throw percentage as they went for 86.4 percent compared to their typical 75.3 percent at the line.
Campbellsville will return Monday, December 13
th to compete against Campbellsville-Harrodsburg. The game will be held at Powell Athletic Center beginning at 6 p.m. ET.
