HONOLULU, Hawaii – The #1 Campbellsville University women's basketball team traveled from the mainland to Hawaii to compete against the #22 Concordia University (Neb.) in the Surf N Hoops Classic. The Lady Tigers were victorious leading the entire game 64-57.
The Lady Tigers came out firing over the Bulldogs. Quickly, the Lady Tigers were up 8-0 over Concordia:
Bailey Pedigo hit a three to start the day,
Faith Lake nailed a three as well, and a
Courtney Pritchett jumper swished through. The Bulldogs answered this lead by mustering a few goals themselves. However,
Lexy Lake dropped a three from deep for a 13-6 score. That score was assisted by Pedigo, making it her third of the quarter. Concordia lessened the lead of the Lady Tigers, but Kaitlyn Wilks put a stop to their advance as she broke through contact under the basket for an and-one, sinking her free throw too. Concordia fought back though taking advantage of an early rebound discrepancy to only trail by two as the quarter ended with a score of 18-15.
To begin quarter two,
Maddy Boyle threw up a shot from the perimeter then followed with a layup assisted by Pedigo. The Lady Tigers had the Bulldogs at another eight-point deficit. Boyle shot again from the three-point line and connected. Concordia gave the Lady Tigers the defense required to stop the ball but could never take the lead. The score stood at 32-26 at the half in favor of the Lady Tigers. Entering the half, neither team shot over 40% from the field. Campbellsville's was buoyed by their 50% (7-14) three-point performance.
The early minutes of the third quarter saw both teams trading baskets but the Lady Tigers sustaining a lead of at least three points. Below-average shooting remained a plague to the agenda for both squads for a bit before Campbellsville began to extend their lead. The Lady Tigers were able to outscore the Bulldogs 16-11 in the third quarter and Concordia was held to just 20% shooting.
Entering the fourth quarter, Campbellsville had their largest lead of the night thus far at 11. However, the Bulldogs got off to an 11-4 run in the fourth hitting 6-7 shots. The Lady Tigers would keep their composure though and Lee show her play-making prowess. In crunch time (last five minutes), Lee had a three-pointer, three assists, and took a critical charge. The Tigers would go on to win 64-57.
Despite resilient competition, the Lady Tigers only lost one quarter (the fourth 20-16) and never lost the lead. Neither teams shot especially well from three but Campbellsville outpaced the Bulldogs by 17%. The Lady Tigers had three players in double-digit points with Wilks leading with 14, then Boyle with 12, and
Faith Lake with 11. Lee dished six assists and Pedigo was just behind her recording four of her own. Pedigo hustled for the most rebounds: 10.
The Surf N Hoops Classic will continue tomorrow as the Lady Tigers take on Siena Heights University at 3 p.m. EST.
