HONOLULU, Hawaii – The #1 Lady Tigers of Campbellsville University returned to the hardwood Sunday afternoon to conclude their participation in the Surf N Hoops Classic. Campbellsville finished the classic with a defeat over Siena Heights University with the score 68-52.
The Lady Tigers began the game with high intensity as they immediately scored a basket produced by
Ashlee McGeorge. Campbellsville set Siena Heights off-balance as they displayed their aggression in passing lanes which turned in to loose balls.
Courtney Pritchett fashioned consecutive mid-range shots to give Campbellsville the edge over the Saints. The Lady Tigers strayed from their usual shots from the arc until
Sarah Sutton sunk a three-pointer for a 15-11 score. Sutton hit another shot from the perimeter to put punctuation on an 8-0 run for the Lady Tigers. The first quarter ended with a Campbellsville six-point lead over Siena Heights: 20-14.
Campbellsville did not slow up entering the second quarter with a pair of free-throws and a three-pointer. Sutton climbed to 3-3 from the perimeter as she grew the score to 28-14.
Bailey Pedigo stole the ball from the Saints to drive to the basket and earn a foul. After the counted basket and good free-throw, the scoreboard displayed 32-16. The Saints generated a few buckets to end the half 38-23.
At the half, Sutton was leading with 13 points and
Shyla Calbert had the most rebounds with four. As a team, the Lady Tigers were in the lead over the Saints for 85.8% of the game whereas Siena Heights were ahead 2.3% of minutes played. Campbellsville was shooting right around their average field goal percentage at 50%.
To begin the second half, the Saints strengthened their desire to score. The Lady Tigers' opponent outscored them in the first three minutes of play. However, with a Kaitlyn Wilks layup, Campbellsville held with a 13-point lead until a Siena Heights three-pointer cut the Lady Tiger lead down to ten points. The momentum shifted back to Campbellsville as
Lauren Lee earned an and-one and received her own rebound from the missed free throw.
Faith Lake attempted a jumper but missed and her sister Lexy won the offensive rebound and netted a layup. By the end of the third, the score showed 52-38 in Campbellsville's favor.
In the final quarter, McGeorge reentered the game and manufactured a layup through heavy defense. However, Siena Heights' rebuttal was a 6-0 run to close in on the Lady Tiger Lead. Pedigo stopped the Saints' run with a drive to the basket. As a minute and a half remained, Lee drove to the paint to earn herself a bucket and a foul. Her charity shots put Campbellsville's score at 64-49. In the final 16 seconds, Pritchett put two points away at the stripe. The Lady Tigers improved to 14-0 on the year as they took the game with a score of 68-52.
Pritchett, Sutton, and Lee all totaled 13 points by game's end. The Saints out-shot Campbellsville in the second half but couldn't muster up enough points to overcome the Lady Tigers' big first two quarters. Calbert finished the game with five rebounds and Pedigo tallied four assists to lead the team in those respective categories.
Campbellsville will reappear after the holidays on January 3
rd for a Mid-South Conference matchup against Georgetown College. The contest will be hosted by the Lady Tigers and will begin at 6 p.m. ET.
