Tigers struggle to close as Martin Methodist comes away with 80-74 win

PULASKI, Tenn. – A back-and-forth game didn't wind up on the side of the Campbellsville University men's basketball team as the Tigers fell 80-74 to Martin Methodist College on Thursday night.

CU entered the second half leading by eight points at 38-30 but the Redhawks played much better in the second period to pull ahead 52-48 behind a 17-4 run from the 17:22 mark to the 11:10 mark. The Tigers were only able to take the lead back just once at 57-54 for the rest of the game as Martin Methodist continued to go on a 20-4 run to gain their largest lead of 13 points at 74-61 with 4:15 left.

Campbellsville would not quit as they brought it back to a 76-72 game and an open corner three-point attempt for Brayden Sebastian that would have made it a one-point game with about 30 seconds left but the shot was missed and MMC was able to knock down four more free throws to ice the game from there.

Taiveyhon Mason for the Tigers led all scorers with 25 points in the game as he shot 11-of-18 from the field and 2-for-5 from three while adding five rebounds and three assists. Forward Ross Ryan was the only other player for CU in double figures as he scored an efficient 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field while adding four rebounds.

The Redhawks had three players plus/minus away from 20 points as Devin Kline led MMC with 22 points, Mohamed Elgohary had 20 points and seven rebounds, and Darrin Jenkins had 18 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.

Campbellsville had a big advantage in the paint, outscoring Martin Methodist inside the lane 40-26 but the Redhawks hit three more three-pointers and nine more free throws in the game to balance out that difference.

The Tigers will head to Marietta, Ga. for their final road game of the season against Life University this Saturday at 4 p.m. ET as the regular season nears a close.
