Hot start for the Tigers fizzles out as Thomas More wins 48-27

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — After Campbellsville led 21-6 Thomas More University outscored the Tigers 42-6 the rest of the way as the Tigers lost their season opener, 48-27.

The Tigers (0-1, 0-1 MSC) came out on offense like gun powder out of a canon but cooled off towards the end of the game s freshman Chase Elmore got his first start at quarterback. On the very first play of the game, offensive coordinator Chris Pardue went deep into the play book with a double pass – the same play he called back in 2008 during his first game as the OC. Elmore found Deuce Shreve in the right flats who then launched a beautiful pass to Tate Pringle for a 74-yard bomb to start the season.

Campbellsville went ahead 14-6 after Ziyon Kenner made a leaping grab in double coverage and got away from the defense for a 73-yard scamper to the endzone. The third TD of the first quarter went back to Pringle as Elmore threw a fade to the corner of the endzone.

After that, it was all Thomas More (2-0, 2-0 MSC). The Saints used three pick-sixes including two from cornerback Kolton Reeves and another by Peyton VanHorn – which those 21 points were the difference in the final score.

The lone touchdown in the second half came in the third quarter as Elmore found Patrick Oden for an 11-yard pass and catch – which made the score 27-27 with 11:07 left in the third quarter. Then the Saints finished with back-to-back interceptions for TDs to put the game out of reach.

Elmore finished throwing for 218 yards on 18-of-29 and three touchdowns. Tate Pringle led the way with 111 yards and two touchdowns, while Kenner finished with five catches and 99 yards.

Jay Volpenhein led Thomas More's passing attack throwing for 269 yards on 15-of-29 with four touchdowns. Charles Gaines led the receiving core for Thomas More with seven grabs and 150 yards and two touchdowns.

The Tigers now will have six days to prepare for University of Pikeville. Campbellsville travels to Pikeville on Friday, Feb. 26 with kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
