Opportunistic Fighting Tigers pull out narrow 14-13 win over Pikeville

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – They say football is a game of inches and for the Campbellsville University football team, it was a game of a point that sent CU home happy Friday night as they earned a 14-13 win over University of Pikeville on the road.

Plenty of football was played but two miscues from the Bears played big roles in the final outcome of the game. UPike scored the opening touchdown of the game with 3:24 left to go in the first quarter as Trevon Wofford threw a score to Arties Clark but kicker Zaniel Philips missed the extra point to make it 6-0.

That extra point would play large in the one-point game but in the final moments of the game, The Tigers punted away to Pikeville with about a minute left but returner Jamarion Sanders muffed the punt as CU recovered and was able to kneel down twice for the victory.

Junior receiver Tate Pringle shined once again as he was able to haul in both Campbellsville touchdowns with a five-yard TD reception in the second quarter and another long one in a 54-yarder in the fourth quarter for the eventual game-winner. Pringle finished with four catches for 78 yards as the receivers only caught 10 passes on the day.

Quarterback Chase Elmore turned the ball over more on Friday with two interceptions but was able to hit Pringle on those two touchdowns while also average 4.9 yards per rush as the Tigers had a better game on the ground this week compared to last.

Running back Cameron Morrisette shined in the backfield, rushing for 88 yards on 21 carries while also busting out a long 43-yard scamper. That long rush for Morrisette had CU cooking in a third-quarter drive but they were stuffed at the one-yard line as they turned the ball over on downs.

For the second-straight week, Campbellsville's defense found a way to keep the Tigers in the game as they only allowed the one passing touchdown early in the game. UPike's other score came on a 92-yard kick return to open up the second half as Chris Dublin took the kick back for six points to make it a 13-7 Pikeville lead.

The Tigers were able to turnover Pikeville four times including that late muffed punt as they also forced Wofford into three interceptions of his own, two by freshman Chance Lucas and another from senior Malcolm Walker. Both Jon Carrothers and Grover Russell led CU in tackles as they both totaled 10 with Russell racking up more solo tackles (5) and Carrothers assisting on more (7).

Campbellsville is scheduled to host their home opener next Friday in the rescheduled game against Bethel University with a recently decided kickoff time of 5 p.m. ET at Finley Stadium.
