Lady Tiger softball schedule update: CU to play Grace and Asbury on Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — A crazy few days of scheduling has culminated into No. 11 Lady Tiger softball playing two games on Sunday against Grace College and Asbury University.

The Lady Tigers will begin on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET against Grace and then play Asbury at 4 p.m. ET.

Tune into the CU Sports Network:
Schedule Updates:
  • The Lady Tigers were scheduled to play two games at Bear Creek Invitational on Saturday but due to the leftover snow on the fields at the Bear Creek Sports Complex, the games were cancelled.
  • CU is attempting to also play two games on Monday but that is yet to be determined.

Campbellsville Notes:
  • The Lady Tigers enter Sunday with a 2-4 overall record after their season-opening week in Florida. Campbellsville defeated Webber International, 9-6, and Southeastern, 6-1, in the two victories.
  • The Lady Tigers very well could be 4-2 overall but big innings by Southeastern and Warner University proved costly for CU. The Lady Tigers gave up eight runs in the sixth against Southeastern and nine runs in the fifth against Warner.
  • CU is led in the pitching circle by Payton Blades' 2.27 ERA and 0-1 record through 12.1 innings. Opponents are hitting .321 off Blades in the circle.
  • Katy Chadwell (2.63 ERA and 1-1 record) and Karson Williams (6.68 ERA and 1-1 record) have also started games for CU and tossed a combined 21 innings with 13 strikeouts.
  • At the plate, it's Riley Hurst leading CU early on with a .421 average and going 8-for-19 at the plate with two doubles and three RBI. Keely Bowling has only seven at-bats but is hitting .429 to start her collegiate career.
  • Blades is also hitting .400, 8-for-20, with a homer and two RBI.

Scouting Grace College Lancers:
  • Grace is 0-2 after dropping games on Saturday to Cumberlands (9-0) and Rio Grande (6-1).
  • In game two against Rio Grande, the Lancer's lone run of the season came on an RBI hit by Britney Young as she went 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • In the circle, Jeri Ellis pitched in game two vs. Rio and went six innings allowing nine hits and five earned runs.
  • Offensively, Grace brings a solid lineup back from last year. Jessica Kaurich batted .409 with seven RBIs in 15 games, and Britney Young boasted a slash line of .381/.458/.548 with four doubles and a homer.
  • Dori Knight is the elder statesman among the pitchers. She has over 200 innings pitched to her career total and has an ERA of 4.76.
  • The Lady Lancers will be led this spring by interim head coach Hannah Swartzentruber and assistant coach Sam Tew. Although the pair are young, they are far from strangers to the program.
  • Both players etched their names frequently in Grace's career record books. Swartzentruber (then Herbster) is the program's leader in stolen bases and is No. 3 in hits. Tew (then Heim) ranks third in steals and sixth in hits.

Scouting Asbury Eagles:
  • Asbury is still waiting to play their first game of the 2021 season according to its website. The Eagles went 8-6 last season in the COVID-19 shortened year.
  • The Eagles are led in the pitching circle by Ally Moore. She is a three-year started for Asbury with 185 innings under her belt and career 3.10 ERA. Overall, she's 12-18 in the win-loss column.
  • Mckenzie Meyer also returns in the circle with 48 career innings and a 5.83 ERA.
  • Offensively, Jenni Beasley hit .344 last season, while Chandler Kelly hit .350 with two homers and 13 RBI.
  • The Eagles are led by first-year head coach Megan Curry as she was hired in the summer of 2020. Coach Curry arrived in Wilmore after serving as an assistant coach at Mercer University and Samford University – both division one programs.
  • Coach Curry played collegiately at Samford and was the 2016 Southern Conference Player of the year in 2016.
