Tigers claim season-opening series over Cumberland University with a pair of wins on Thursday night

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — In the opening series of the weekend for Campbellsville University baseball, the Tigers won two of the three games over Cumberland University to start the season.

Campbellsville swept Thursday night's doubleheader, 6-2 and 11-4, but fell in the third game of the series, 4-2.

CU's offense came alive in the first two games with 16 combined hits and 18 runs but the chilly Friday morning bats were silent for the majority of the contest until the seventh inning with CU tallied two runs.

Overall in the three games, leadoff hitter Colton Titus led the way with five hits in nine at-bats to hit .556. Jaylin Turner went 4-for-9 with four RBI and a homer in game two of the series, while Noah Amenta also drove in four runs and went 3-for-7. Dutton Elske tallied the first homer for the Tigers in his first at-bat for the Tigers in game two of the series Thursday evening.

On the mound, it was Trestyn Dumiieu entering in relief of Brady Tedesco tossing four innings and picking up the win on Thursday. He struck out five batters and did not allow a base runner.

In game two of the series, it was Aaron Hutchinson picking up the win tossing four innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out five. Gage Smart entered in relief and tossed two innings allowing one walk and striking out four, while Kam Robertson picked the final inning in game two.

Overall on Thursday, the Tiger pitching staff struck out 16 batters in two games.

The third game saw a different story as Zack Bromstead didn't make it out of the second inning after allowing three walks – two of them coming around to score. But Logan Davis entered on the hill and was spectacular in relief tossing 4.2 innings and striking out two while only allowing three hits overall.

Mason Lee entered for the final three innings on Friday morning and allowed three hits and one run.

The Tigers were outdueled by Cumberland's Hooper Mills as he was lights out. He finished tossing 6.2 innings and allowed only seven hits and two earned runs – which should have been zero runs but a miss communication on a routine fly ball in right-center allowed two runs to score. He kept the Tigers at bay striking out nine batters and walking three.

Javien Lindsey picked up a two-plus inning save – his sixth - without allowing a hit and striking out four in 2.1 innings.

Campbellsville now will have a few days to prepare for a non-conference doubleheader with Rio Grande on Tuesday. CU hosts the RedStorm at 1 p.m. ET for two games before traveling to Bethel University for a weekend conference series.
