CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – in the first home game for Campbellsville University football, the Tigers dropped a 39-14 game to Bethel University to move to 1-2 through three games on the season.
The Tigers hung with the Wildcats for the first quarter, even after Bethel scored on a 11-play, 64 yard drive that was capped off by an Anthony Hughes two-yard rush. BU went on to miss a field goal and punt twice in the rest of the quarter as the game-changing play came with Campbellsville driving trying to tie the game.
Down 7-0, CU had a second down and six on the 28-yard line as
Chase Elmore threw a ball to
Tate Pringle towards the end zone. Pringle and Bethel's Devious Christmon both looked to grab the ball at the same time as Christmon came off the ground with the ball and the officials called an interception and touchback for Bethel.
Two drives later, Bethel extended their lead to 13-0 on a Deontay Tate 11-yard touchdown run. CU found their way into Bethel territory again later in the second quarter but couldn't convert as they turned it over on downs following a sack of Elmore.
Bethel was able to force Elmore to run for his life a lot in the game as they sacked the freshman nine times for 70 total yards lost. Offensively the Wildcats were strong both through the air and on the ground as they gained 530 yards of total offense, 217 rushing and 313 passing.
Conversely, for Campbellsville they net only four rushing yards and passed for 243 yards as the sacks piled up for that four-yard rushing effort. Elmore eventually threw two touchdown passes to
Paul McCown and Pringle in the second half but it wasn't enough for a comeback effort.
The Tigers will be back on the road next week when they head to Georgetown, Ky. for a matchup with Georgetown College before coming back home for two-straight games at home with a bye week in the middle.
