CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – A weekend that saw Campbellsville University host nine different men's volleyball matches between six different teams came to a close as the Tiger volleyball team earned a win over Truett-McConnell on Saturday morning and a loss to Warner later in the evening.
The match against Warner was a back-and-forth affair that saw the Royals earn a five-set win by set scores of 13-25, 25-20, 26-24, 22-25, and 15-11.
CU dominated the opening set while producing a .700 hitting percentage (15-for-20) but only hit as high as .250 in any following set for the rest of the match.
The Royals turned the momentum in their favor when they made a change at setter from Franky Zamora to Matheus Collares as Collares finished with 35 assists in the match. Outside, Warner relied on Eduardo Ayala and Augusto Silva as they had 17 and 10 kills respectively to lead the Royals.
Individually for the Tigers, it was a busy match for
Jakob Zum Kolk as he was set 46 times to finish with a match-high 22 kills but added nine errors.
Rafael Cruz (12) and
Jose Viera Cerame (11) added double digit kills but Cruz struggled to find consistency as he produced 10 attack errors.
Unforced errors really stifled CU as they gave Warner 43 points on either attack errors (27) and service errors (16). More evidence that errors hurt the Tigers, Campbellsville was credited for 82 points scored with the Royals scoring 62, so CU outscored Warner by 20 points offensively and still dropped the match.
In their morning match against Truett-McConnell, Campbellsville had one of their most dominant performances in program history as they only allowed the Bears to score 15 total points over the three sets. CU won the sets by scores of 25-3, 25-8, and 25-4 with the Tigers recording 30 team kills, 11 aces, and five blocks.
The Tigers played a lot of their lineup out of position with Smith playing as an outside hitter,
Jay Montalvo serving as the setter, Zum Kolk played libero, and
Max Stotridge played in the middle for the first time in a few years.
Andres Laboy led the Tigers in kills playing full rotation as he finished with seven in the match with Smith and Stotridge each finishing with six kills.
Keaton Marshall spelled Smith some in the back row as Marshall finished with a kill, three digs, and three aces in his first action of the 2021 season.
Campbellsville will play their next match on Tuesday when they travel to Cumberland University in a make-up of a match postponed from Feb. 11.
