Weining's late buckets, Mason's late defense leads Tigers to third win in a row

LEBANON, Tenn. — It's usually the offense that shines for Taiveyhon Mason but today it was the defense as the senior guard stepped over for a charge with 29 seconds left in overtime to secure Campbellsville's win over Cumberland University, 81-77.

Mason scored 16 points including six rebounds and four assists, but the defensive play was perfect timing for a much-needed Tiger win – that extended CU's win streak to three in a row.

After the charge taken by Mason, Cumberland's best offensive player, Tavon King, fouled out and went to the bench. Fellow Campbellsville guard Max Reyes stepped up to hit two free throws late giving CU the four-point lead – which is where the final score settled. Reyes led the way for CU with 19 pints including 7-of-8 from the free throw line and five rebounds.

In addition to Mason and Reyes, Sam Weining stepped up defensively but scored four points in the final 1:20 to help the Tigers rally. Reyes found him at the block to put CU ahead, 77-75, then an offensive rebound and put-back by Weining with 29 seconds left gave the Tigers the lead for good.

The game started with multiple runs by both teams. Cumberland led 9-0, Campbellsville then answered with a 10-0 run to lead 10-9, but it was the Phoenix that regained the lead once again with a 10-0 run themselves.

The biggest lead of the day came at 10 points for the Tigers, 59-49, at the 10:11 mark in the second half as Lenorris Mincey flushed home a pass from Reyes. But the next eight minutes went in favor of the Phoenix after a 18-8 to tie the game at 67-all.

Only two points each were scored by both teams in the final three minutes. Mason had a chance with time expiring in regulation but his 3 missed.

In overtime, Tyler Byrd hit his fourth 3-pointer of the day and gave the Phoenix a three-point lead, but a Brayden Sebastian triple tied it up. Sebastian finished the day 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting and 3-of-6 from deep.

After the Sebastian 3, both teams swapped baskets back and forth until the final Weining bucket in the paint with 29 seconds left.

Cumberland's Tavon King, who fouled out in the final minute, finished the day with 25 points, four rebounds and three assists.

The win is the third in a row for Campbellsville as the Tigers improve to 9-11 overall and 7-10 inside MSC play. CU travels to Georgetown College on Monday, Feb. 8 for a doubleheader with the women's team starting at 5:30 and 8 p.m. ET, respectively.
