Georgetown scores 24 unanswered points to beat Campbellsville 27-6

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — After Campbellsville University led 6-3 with a little over four minutes remaining in the first half, Georgetown College flipped the switch in the final few minutes of the half and into the second half to score 24 unanswered points Friday night. Georgetown took down Campbellsville 27-6 at Toyota Stadium.

Campbellsville (1-3, 1-3 MSC) started out fantastic defensively, recording five sacks in the first half including 3.5 sacks from graduate senior Micah Corley but the defense got tired after being on the field for 75 plays.

Special teams played a huge role throughout the opening half as Chris Cline put Georgetown (3-1, 3-1 MSC) ahead 3-0 with a 32-yard field goal. The CU Tigers answered just a few minutes later as Morley tipped a pass at the line of scrimmage leading to an Andrew Bennett interception deep into Georgetown territory. Starting QB Chase Elmore hit Tate Pringle on a back-shoulder fade to the right pylon and the duo hooked up for their sixth TD of the year.

The score was 6-3 going into the final 2:48 of the half but Georgetown took advantage of costly penalties to keep their ensuing drive alive and Cline knocked through a career-long 42-yard field goal tying the game 3-3.

Starting the second half, it was all Georgetown. The Tigers scored three straight touchdowns including a 44-yard double pass from Aaron Maggard to Jake Johnson with 11:43 left in the game to put the nail in the coffin.

The Tigers would trail 13-6 after a roughing the kicker penalty took three points off the board for Georgetown, but it turned into the first second-half touchdown. Darius Barbour was on the receiving end of a five-yard pass from Dampier. Barbour led the way offensively for GC with 11 catches on 136 yards.

Trailing 13-6, Campbellsville had opportunities but a turnover on downs after an 11-play 50-yard drive that pushed the ball down to the Georgetown 25-yard line was stopped.

GC answered with a nine-play 75-yard drive for a touchdown as Dampier broke a few tackles and scored from nine yards out. The score now 20-6, Elmore was intercepted after the Tigers were driving with 12:59 to play. Georgetown took advantage with the double pass dagger as Johnson scored from 44-yards out.

With 10:26 left in the fourth quarter, Elmore received a low snap and got hit hard forcing him to be carted off the field and Josh Meglis took over at QB. The offense would be forced to punt and turned the ball over on downs in their final two drives.

Elmore was 20-of-31 for 177 yards and the lone TD to Pringle in the first half. Ziyon Kenner had a career day with six catches for 99 yards leading the receiving core. Pringle had six catches for 57 yards and Patrick Oden finished with six catches for 47 yards.

Defensively, Jon Carrothers finished with a team-high 11 tackles.

Campbellsville returns home to host University of the Cumberlands on Friday night, March 19 at 6 p.m. ET.
