Tigers struggle from start to finish in 39-7 loss to Cumberlands

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – It was a rough go for the Campbellsville University football team Friday night as they dropped a 39-7 game at Finley Stadium to University of the Cumberlands.

The game started off on the very wrong foot as quarterback Joshua Meglis' first pass was intercepted by JR Smith of the Patriots and returned for a touchdown just 14 seconds into the game as UC took an early 6-0 lead.

On the next drive of the game for CU, the Tigers went three-and-out but in punt formation, Tate Pringle took off on a fake and went 70 yards for the lone Campbellsville touchdown in the game as they held a 7-6 lead.

From that point on, the Tigers were outscored 33-0 as Cumberlands scored 13 points in each of the first three quarters and the fourth quarter went scoreless on the way to the 32-point victory for the Patriots.

UC played a strong overall game offensively as quarterback Nathan Arnold threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns while adding a rushing touchdown, running back Martize Smith ran for 147 yards, and receiver Darius Young caught six passes for 123 yards and two of the TD receptions.

Defensively the Tigers had good individual efforts from Jon Carrothers and Micah Corley as Carrothers finished with a game-high 18 tackles with a sack as Corley finished his second-straight game with three sacks as he finished with eight tackles and three sacks for a loss of 10 yards.

In the Tigers' opening drive of the third quarter, CU was driving as they went 56 yards all the way to the red zone but a Meglis lob into the endzone towards Pringle was tipped into the air and snagged by Kynan Russell of the Patriots for their second interception of the game, deflating any of the momentum CU tried to produce.

Campbellsville will head into their lone off week of the 2020 season before they host Lindsey Wilson at Finley Stadium on Thursday, April 1 for senior night.
