CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Coming into Tuesday night without a win in two-straight tilts, the Campbellsville University was able to pick up a win in their final home game of the regular season with a 3-2 victory over Freed-Hardeman University.
Prior to the start of the game, Tiger soccer honored six seniors that included
Scott Brooksbank,
Calvin Heck,
Gospel Kazako,
Pedro Ramos,
Eleder Goicoechea, and
Tom Edge for Senior Night.
The game was decided in the 59
th minute when
Sebastiano Musu headed home a ball from Brooksbank to make it 3-2. The Tigers had outshot the Lions severely throughout the game at a final of 23-5 but the game was tied 2-2 early in the second half after FHU capitalized on a pair of opportunities for their only shots on goal in the game.
Campbellsville got the first two goals of the game as Edge scored a penalty kick goal in the 11
th minute after Musu drew a foul in the box. The senior captain, Edge took the shot and buried it to give CU the early 1-0 lead.
Nearly 20 minutes later, Goicoechea scored the second goal of the game as he beat defenders in the box and scored near post to make it 2-0 Tigers with 15 minutes left in the opening half.
The Lions were able to cut into that lead before the halftime break as Joao Souto scored on off a free kick cross from Christian Sachs in the 40
th minute to make it a 2-1 game at halftime.
Quickly into the second half, Kenneth Ramirez scored on a penalty kick for FHU after CU's
Simon Zahalka was called for a hand ball in the box, for which he was assessed a yellow card as well.
Freed-Hardeman played a physical game that resulted in a pair of first half yellow cards for Ramirez and Mauricio Gonzalez of the Lions for three total bookings in the match.
Campbellsville will hit the road for the final two games of the Mid-South Conference regular season as they will play Cumberland University next Sunday followed by the finale against Martin Methodist next Tuesday.
