Lady Tigers fall in MSC title game 56-47 to Thomas More

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – For the third time in as many matchups, Thomas More was able to get the better of the Campbellsville University women's basketball team as the Saints pulled off a 56-47 win in the Mid-South Conference Championship game.

The 47 points scored was the lowest point total produced by the Lady Tigers this season as Thomas More held Campbellsville to their previous low of 55 in their regular season matchup. The last time CU scored less than 50 points in a game came in 2017 when then No. 3 Freed-Hardeman held the Lady Tigers to 49 points in the Champions Classic.

TMU's defense was very limited to Campbellsville as the Lady Tigers shot just 15-of-49 (30.6%) from the field and 6-for-20 (30.0%) from three-point range. As Campbellsville usually forces more turnovers than they commit, the turnover margin finished 19-17 in favor or Thomas More as the Saints also had an eight-point advantage in points off of turnovers.

The game was a one or two possession game for a majority of the 40 minutes before Thomas More was able to pull further ahead to an eight-point lead at 53-45 with 3:52 remaining as CU was never to pull it back any closer than eight points from then on.

The game was tied at 23-23 heading into halftime despite the Lady Tigers, more specifically Savannah Gregory, starting the game on a 10-0 run. Gregory scored the first 10 points of the game but then went on to only score four points in the rest of the game but still finished with a game-high in points while adding 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Gregory and fellow senior Sammy Rogers both struggled from three-point range throughout the game as they combined to go 3-for-14 from deep with Gregory going 2-for-8 with both of those threes coming in that 10-0 stretch to start the game and Rogers going 1-for-6 from deep.

What had been a bench unit that had been producing quality offensive support, only contributed 13 points for Campbellsville in the game. Sarah Sutton had come off of four-straight games in double figures, but the sophomore went scoreless in the championship game going 0-for-4 in just nine minutes played.

For the Saints, Maggie Jones scored 14 points off the bench to lead TMU with Taylor Clos finishing in double figures as well with 10. Jones and Clos both hit backbreaking baskets late in the game as Jones hit a three-pointer to make it a 53-45 and Clos had a fast break layup to make it 55-45.

Campbellsville will now await the NAIA National Championship Tournament Selection Show this Thursday to see where they seed and where they will be playing in their opening round for a chance to head to the final tournament location in Sioux City, Iowa.
