Tigers earn split with No. 7 Georgia Gwinnett to pick up first Top 10 win of season

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — After allowing four runs in the fifth inning of game one and falling 5-3, Campbellsville University baseball bounced back with a 13-9 win in game two over No. 7 Georgia Gwinnett on Saturday.

The Tigers (8-9, 6-5 MSC) were one inning away from clinching a sweep over the Grizzlies (21-7, 0-0 AII). The loss for Georgia Gwinnett was the first in 10 games.

Game one: Georgia Gwinnett 5, Campbellsville 3

The Tigers struck early and often in the first two innings leading 3-1 after two. Tyler Cox delivered a solo homer with two outs on the first pitch he saw to give CU an early advantage – his second of the season. Griffin Keller answered with his seventh homer of the year to tie it at 1-1 in the bottom half.

In the second, CU brought seven batters to the plate after a leadoff walk by Tommy Sepulveda and single by Sutton Elske both came around to score on a squeeze by Cale Thompson and RBI single by Colton Titus, respectively.

But that was all the offense CU could muster in game one as CU only had one base runner reach in the final four innings.

Aaron Hutchinson was lights out through the first four innings allowing four hits and striking out two. But in the fifth, the Grizzlies broke through with two outs scoring all four runs including a three-run home run by Nick Barnes – his sixth of the year.

Trestyn DuMilieu entered into the fifth and after a walk and error, worked out of the jam without giving up more runs.

Game two: Campbellsville 13, Georgia Gwinnett 9

The Tigers scored runs in six of the nine innings including seven in the first three frames. But Georgia Gwinnett followed suite as the nine-inning finale was tied 7-7 after three. That's when CU scored six unanswered runs until GGC scratched two in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Eddy Artega, Noah Amenta and Tommy Sepulveda all tallied three hits – including a pair of doubles by Amenta. He drove in three runs.

Game two was "John Whole Staff" for both teams as 13 pitchers saw action. Kam Robertson earned the victory for CU throwing three innings allowing two hits through three innings in relief while striking out two. Logan Davis and Mason Lee also worked an inning apiece without allowing any runs.

Up Next:

The Tigers now travel to Midway University for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 30. On Wednesday, March 31, CU is scheduled to travel to Lindsey Wilson College for a non-conference date with the Blue Raiders.
