WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – With the first game of their Mid-South Conference series being rained out, the Campbellsville University baseball team took on University of the Cumberlands for a Sunday doubleheader as the Patriots earned a pair of wins.
Both games were tight throughout as UC was able to pull off a 6-4 win in game one followed by a 5-3 win in game two. It took a four-run seventh inning in the first game for the Patriots to pull away and a three-run second inning helped Cumberlands jump out early on the Tigers in game two.
GAME 1 SUMMARY
Cumberlands was able to take an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the second inning as Candido Encarnacion sent one out to left against
Zack Bromstead on an 0-1 pitch. The Tigers quickly answered with a run in the top of the third after they executed a safety squeeze with runners on first and third but were unable to produce any more than the single run in the third.
The Patriots returned the favor in the bottom half of the inning as they manufactured a run to make the game a one-run contest in favor of UC.
Bromstead was removed after the third after allowing two runs on two hits while striking out six. He was replaced
Korren Thompson as the left-hander ended up going five innings while striking out nine batters.
It was that four-run seventh inning that hurt Thompson and the Tigers as they led off the inning with the first three runners reaching base including a sacrifice bunt attempt that was thrown away by Thompson, leading to the first two runs of the inning to score.
Two doubles later, the Patriots put up four to take a 6-2 lead heading into the final two innings of play. CU scored two in the top of the eighth to cut it to 6-4 but left the bases loaded to end the eighth and went three-up, three-down in the ninth to end it.
GAME 2 SUMMARY
Aaron Hutchinson got the start in the seven-inning game two as he was roughed up a bit early to allow a run in the first and three in the second to finish with a line of four earned runs on six hits.
The big blow against Hutchinson came by way of a three-run home run from Ray Villanueva as he sent one out to left with two outs in the second inning to make it a 4-0 game early.
Campbellsville added runs on a
Noah Amenta sacrifice fly in the third, and a pair of runs in the seventh on an
Eddy Arteaga ground out and a
Grant McQueary single to cut the lead to 5-3 but couldn't add any more as the tying run was stranded at second base.
Tiger baseball will be back on the diamond this Tuesday when they host their first of four-straight at HIG Field as Brescia University will come to Campbellsville for a mid-week matchup.
