CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – In their second-straight meeting, the Campbellsville University men's soccer team earned a 3-0 win against University of Pikeville in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Opening Round Friday afternoon at Finley Stadium.
Coming off of a 9-0 win at Pikeville just this past Sunday, the Tigers once again dominated possession but Pikeville defense and mainly the Bears' goalkeeper Jalen Smith were able to limit the goals in the tournament game.
CU fired 25 total shots towards Smith and the UPike goal with 12 going on frame but only came away with the three-goal advantage after full time. Comparatively, Pikeville only took two shots, both in the second half with only one requiring a save from Tiger keeper
Jeremi Campagnolo.
The three goals came off of the feet of three separate Campbellsville players as
Kalvin Semedo scored in the fifth minute of the game after receiving a through ball from
Eleder Goicoechea and beating Smith one-on-one.
It took until the 60
th minute for the Tigers to get back on the board as an odd play set up a penalty kick goal for
Tom Edge. A Pikeville player went down in the box to eventually put his hands on the ball, no foul was called, and a penalty was awarded to CU for the hand ball in the box.
Pikeville's Victor Vechi was distraught enough with the call that went against him that he received two yellow cards for his complaints towards the refs, leading to a red card and the Bears playing a man down for the final 30 minutes of the game.
Less than three minutes later, it was Goicoechea on the receiving end of a Semedo pass for a goal as the former headed home a cross from the latter to make it 3-0 Tigers.
Campbellsville will move on to the quarterfinal stage, to be hosted at CU's Finley Stadium, as they will face No. 4 seed Cumberland University at 1:30 p.m. ET.
