Lady Tigers drop final three sets to fall to Cumberland 3-2

LEBANON, Tenn. – In the second meeting, first in Mid-South Conference play between the two programs, the Campbellsville University women's volleyball team fell 3-2 to Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn. Thursday night.

The Lady Tigers had a two sets to none lead before dropping the third in extra points then going on to lose the fourth and fifth sets with set score of 17-25, 17-25, 29-27, 25-22, and 15-11 in favor of the Phoenix.

That tight third set seemed to be the difference in the match as Cumberland took all momentum from that win and carried it over to the final two sets. Once the score got to 16-16 in the third set, the only two-point lead was for Campbellsville at 19-17, but from then on, it was either a tie or a one-point lead until Cumberland took the final three points of the set after the Lady Tigers had a 27-26 lead.

Despite the loss, it was another stellar statistical night for Sonia Flendrich as she led the match in both kills (17) and digs (34) for another double-double on the season. Flendrich was also the most efficient hitter for Campbellsville as she finished with those 17 kills on 47 total attacks with only three errors over the five sets.

Cumberland didn't have a player with as many kills as Flendrich but they did have three players in double figures with Isabella Curcio with 14, Lauren Galvan with 13, and Nicole Carey with 10. The Phoenix finished with six more blocks than Campbellsville did as a team with Cumberland finishing at a 9-3 advantage for rejections.

The Lady Tiger middle blocker tandem of Stela Velinova and Taylor Weirich had relatively efficient nights as well both hitting over .200 with seven kills for Velinova and eight for Weirich.

Setter Paige Merrick had another double-double for the Lady Tigers with 39 assists and 21 digs with libero Katie Morin coming up just three assists shy of her second-straight double-double at 18 digs and seven assists.

Campbellsville women's volleyball has one more regular season match remaining when they will travel to Columbia, Ky. for the Battle of Highway 55 match against Lindsey Wilson College on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
