Tiger baseball drops tight 4-2 game to Union College

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Runs were tough to come by in Campbellsville University baseball's home finale for the 2021 regular season as Union College earned a 4-2 win at HIG Field on Tuesday night.

There was never more than one run scored in an inning as the Bulldogs never trailed in the game and the score was never tied for more than an inning at separate times throughout the game.

Union got the scoring started in the first inning after an error to leadoff the inning eventually came around to score to make it 1-0 UC. Campbellsville tied it up in the third inning on an unearned run from the Union defense this time as Anthony Marcano reach on an error and was singled home with two outs by Jaylin Turner.

The bottom of the third started a stretch of a single run scored for four-straight half innings as Union scored runs in the top of the fourth and fifth answering Tiger runs scored in the third then once again in the fourth as Grant McQueary smashed a two-out double to right center to make it 2-2 at the time.

CU used a lot of bodies in Tuesday night's game as 16 position players got at least one at bat and eight pitchers threw at least an inning's worth of work to get as many players as possible action heading down the final stretch of the regular season and preparing for the postseason.

On the mound, Logan Davis, Braxton Davis, Gage Smart, and Mason Lee highlighted the night for the pitching staff as all four threw scoreless innings. Davis and Lee were the only two pitchers for the Tigers to put up three-up, three-down innings as the Bulldogs had runners on in every inning but the sixth and ninth innings.

The final two pitchers for Union in Nicko Cottone and Matt Pfeffer only allowed two baserunners and one hit over the final five innings against Campbellsville as Cottone went two innings in relief to pick up the win and Pfeffer completed the save after three perfect innings.

Campbellsville will finish out the Mid-South Conference schedule with a crucial three-game series at Thomas More University that was just moved to start on Thursday evening in Crestview Hills, Ky. due to the weather forecast. The Tigers and Saints will play three games in the series, one on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET and a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m. ET.
