Tigers hang on for 5-4 win in nail biting series opener against Thomas More

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Hoping to bust out of a two-game winning streak, the Campbellsville University baseball team did just that with a 5-4 win over Thomas More University Thursday evening.

The Tigers scored the first four runs of the game through five innings but TMU came storming back in both the sixth and the eighth with two runs apiece in those innings but an important insurance run for CU in the top of the eighth allowed Campbellsville to maintain their lead and hang on for the one-run win.

Saint defensive miscues allowed for some of those early runs for the Tigers as a two-out error in the second inning allowed for the first run of the game to score followed by an error in the third turning a Bryan Javier single into a de facto triple as Javier was able to score on a Colton Titus single.

The two-run fifth started with an Aaron Greenfield double as he was eventually driven in by Javier followed by singles by Titus and Noah Amenta as Amenta's single up the middle drove in Javier to make it 4-0.

It took TMU six innings to get to Campbellsville starter Zack Bromstead as he gave up those pair of runs in the sixth after five shutout innings. Mason Lee was able to enter in the sixth to limit the damage to just those two runs.

A long top of the eighth only led to a single run being scored on a two-out pinch-hit RBI single from Sam Fagerness to make it 5-2 as the Tigers left the bases loaded with a chance to add on more.

That insurance run did pay off important for CU before the first two batters of the inning for the Saints reached including a two-run home run from Thomas More's Derek Atwood.

Lee allowed more base runners in the inning but was relieved by Trestyn DuMilieu who was able to maintain the Campbellsville lead and eventually shut the door in the ninth for a five-out save.

The Tigers and Saints will finish off their series with a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m. ET at Thomas More Baseball Field.
