Tigers salvage final game in series against Georgetown after tough game one and two results

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – A weekend Mid-South Conference series that saw it all ended with the Campbellsville University baseball team winning only one game in their three games series against Georgetown this Friday and Saturday.

Georgetown took game one in blowout fashion by a final of 16-1 on Friday night with GC pulling out an extra innings thriller in game two Saturday afternoon before CU was able to salvage the finale 7-1 in seven innings for game three.

GAME 1 SUMMARY

Georgetown had four-straight innings of crooked numbers as they bashed a pair of home runs including a Shota Usuda grand slam in the third inning to bust it wide open to 11-0 following a five-run second and a six-run third.

Georgetown's starter Jake Manderson went all seven innings in the mercy rule seven-inning contest as he struck out nine CU batters while only allowing five hits and walking none.

The only run that Campbellsville managed was on a wild pitch in the sixth inning after Dawson Cole doubled and advanced to third and home on separate wild pitches.

GAME 2 SUMMARY

Georgetown struck first again but Campbellsville was able to limit damage to one run apiece in the fourth and fifth innings respectively. GC scored both of their runs on throwing errors, first on a throw towards a trail runner at second bases following a wild pitch as the throw went into center field, allowing the lead runner to score, then on a stolen bases attempt of third pitcher Zack Bromstead threw it by the third base bag to allow the runner to turn and head home.

Outside of the throwing mishap, Bromstead pitched a strong 4.2 innings allowing only the two runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Down only two, CU chipped away first in the sixth inning when Tyler Cox drove in Aaron Greenfield on a single up the middle to make it 2-1. It was Cox once again in the eighth with another ball up the middle, this time scoring Cale Thompson as the score was then tied at 2-2.

The score remained tied at 2-2 all the way until the 13th inning, largely in part to the relief effort from left-hander Korren Thompson as he went 6.2 innings while striking out eight and only allowing five hits. Thompson pitched from the seventh to through the 12th scoreless to keep CU's hopes alive before Georgetown was finally able to break through.

A two-out walk started the rally for GC in the 13th with as a stolen base, a single, and a double make it 4-2, as Thompson was hung with the loss.

Georgetown's Keon Taylor pitched seven innings out of the bullpen as he gave up the tying run in the eighth on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks to move to 2-1 on the season.

GAME 3 SUMMARY

Campbellsville's bats came alive in a big way in the second inning of game three as they put up a five-spot on three different pitches in that inning. The first two batters of the inning got out as the next six batters reached via a single, knocking two pitchers out of the game and scoring four of the five runs in that inning.

CU got hits from Jeremiah Lebron, Greenfield, Bryan Javier, Colton Titus, Eddy Arteaga, and Cox with Jaiver driving in two, Titus adding an RBI, and Cox driving home his third of the day.

Noah Amenta hit a ball hard that resulted in an error that drove in the fifth run of the inning, giving Campbellsville a much-desired lead in the series.

Trestyn DuMilieu started game three after facing one batter in the 13th inning of game two as he went a strong 4.2 innings of five-hit ball to allow an unearned run with four strikeouts and two walks to move to 3-2 on the season.

Campbellsville baseball will be at home for one more next Monday before hitting the road for four-straight as they will host Indiana Southeast at HIG Field Monday night at 6 p.m. ET.
