CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Hoping to carry last week's mid-week momentum into this week's non-conference slate, the Campbellsville University baseball team fell just short in a 5-3 loss to Indiana University Southeast at HIG Field Monday night.
It was a well-pitched game from both sides as only six of the eight runs were earned and a pair of pitchers throwing four or more innings of shutout baseball.
Starter Lane Oesterling went five shutout innings for the Grenadiers, allowing only two hits and a walk on his way to the win.
Mason Lee pitched four innings of relief for the Tigers as he allowed no hits but three walks and struck out three batters to keep Campbellsville alive for the final four innings of the game.
CU trailed 5-0 after six innings as
Logan Davis got the start for Campbellsville to throw a 1-2-3 first inning with the help of a double play ball but struggled with control, with two walks, a hit batter, two wild pitches, and a throwing error to allow two runs in the inning.
Kam Robertson entered in relief and was able to limit the damage in the second inning and pitched into the sixth to allow three runs on three hits while striking out and walking two. In the sixth inning, Robertson gave up back-to-back home runs on back-to-back pitches to lead off the inning to eventually be replaced by Lee.
The Tigers started a comeback in the seventh by scoring a run on a
Dutton Elske RBI single before adding two more in the eighth inning on
Jaylin Turner and
Tommy Sepulveda RBIs. It was Elske up again with runners on first and third with a chance to keep the rally going but he popped into foul territory to end the inning as CU went 1-2-3 in the ninth, ending the game for the Grenadier win.
Campbellsville will finish the week with four road games starting with a non-conference game at Union tomorrow followed by a Saturday/Sunday series at University of the Cumberlands.
