The Lady Tigers return to their winning ways against conference foe UT Southern with a sweep

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville women's volleyball grabs a crucial win against the Firehawks of University Tennessee Southern.

Coming off an unsettling loss one night before, the Lady Tigers clearly came out with the drive to avoid beginning their season 0-2 in Mid-South Conference play for the season. In the first set, junior outside hitter Sophie Ball was torching her serves; she had three aces in the first set alone and ended the match with seven total. Campbellsville took the first set with a resounding 25-9 performance.

A kill from freshmen Molly Shannon opened the second set. Shannon recorded four kills in the second frame alone. As it progressed, the middle set quickly became the story of the mounting assists by senior Paige Merrick. She would tally her season-high in assists with 40. The Lady Tigers rode the momentum of high efficiency play for another convincing set victory: 25-12.

The third set would be a back-and-forth affair. The Firehawks would not go quietly, but that did not stop senior Sonia Flendrich from clutch play and logging her best game of the 2021 season. In the deciding set, Flendrich struck seven kills which brought her to a total of 13 for the night, her season high. When the dust settled, the match was Campbellsville's following the 25-19 final set. The Firehawks were held to just a .089 hitting percentage compared to Campbellsville's .360. That reflected in the final kill numbers (49-20 CU), assists (46-20 CU), and in aces (10-1 CU).

The Lady Tigers will have six days until they face off against their next opponent: Mid-South Conference rival University of the Cumberlands. That game will be played at home on September 16th at 7 p.m. ET.
