CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Lady Tigers may have recorded the sweep, but it was a tough battle in each set against the University of the Cumberlands Patriots.
Looking to climb above .500 against Mid-South Conference teams this season, Senior
Alina Zellin came in for the kill quite literally – she led the Lady Tigers with seven kills through the first set. Although Campbellsville maintained a small cushion of a lead throughout, the Patriots never backed down as the set ended 25-19.
The second set saw their cushion shrink as long rallies and reciprocated ferocity became the story of the match. Graduate student Salma-Gonzalez Sosa kept Cumberlands' attacks from the floor with 26 digs total. Senior
Paige Merrick set up a staggering number of kills recording her season high assist total with 40. The second set ended 25-20.
The electricity of the third set was incredible by the end, but the beginning began to look like the Patriots would take it. At the most, the Lady Tigers trailed by six points before they began to claw their way back to the front. Freshmen
Cierra Merrick killed 4 balls in the final set alone. Merrick and Zellin both ended up sharing the high number in kills with 11. The Lady Tigers solidified the sweep with a 25-21 come-from-behind victory. When all was said and done, Campbellsville had 21 more kills, 13 more digs, and 22 more points than Cumberlands.
Campbellsville will travel to the University of Pikeville this weekend to face the Bears, another Mid-South Conference rival, and seek to stretch their current win streak to three games. That match will be played September 18
