Shannon shines in sweep over Georgetown College

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University women's volleyball team recorded their fourth straight home sweep Tuesday night with their win against the Georgetown College Tigers.

Freshmen Molly Shannon led the Lady Tigers with six kills in the first set followed by fellow freshmen Cierra Merrick with five and then senior Sonia Flendrich with four. Campbellsville exerted their will early and capitalized on opportunities with aggression and accuracy. The Lady Tigers would take the set 25-14.

The second set got off to a rockier start. Georgetown notched four points before Campbellsville appeared on the scoreboard. Despite the rough start, Shannon ended the set climbing up to ten total for the match. The Lady Tigers launched an 11-0 run in the last leg to secure the second set, 25-17.

It would be back-to-back aces from Shannon that set the tone early in the final set. Georgetown College fought back though and took a decent lead until the Lady Tigers rediscovered their groove and snatched the lead back. They would not look back and ended the match in a sweep with a 25-19 clinching set.

Graduate transfer Salma Gonzalez-Sosa had a team high 20 digs. Senior Paige Merrick had her hands on assist after assist. When the match was finished, she tallied yet another double-double: 33 assists, and 13 digs. That marks Merrick's ninth of the season.

Senior Sonia Flendrich began the match needing only seven kills to reach 1,000 for her career. Flendrich now sits at 999 heading into next week's home contest against the Mid-South Conference's Cumberland University. That match will be Tuesday, October 5th at 7 p.m. ET at Gosser Gymnasium.
